There are few TV series that I feel truly deserve the honor of being collected in their entirety. Stargate SG1 is one of them. Truth to tell, I’ve only recorded two other start to finish in my entire life – Star Trek: The Next Generation and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. I still haven’t gotten the DVD version of ST:TNG – eleven years worth is damn expensive, you know. I have upgraded to the DVDs of L&C. We didn’t record SG1 ourselves either. Not sure why, but this was simply a series that one knew was going to be merchandized so we waited and got the complete collection all in one shot. Translated, this means that my son conned his father into getting it for us. Whatever works. 😉
Anyway, today is the anniversary of the first day this series aired in 1997 and I thought it fitting to mention one more time how much I loved it when it was on and still do. All ten years of it. That’s saying something. Sure there were downturns in the course of ten years. All series have them, long or short, but especially if they were on for that long. The quality of this one was so high that even the bad episodes have something to offer, particularly if one is a sci-fi fan. And there are some bad episodes. Seriously.
Then there’s the mythological stuff. For a mythology buff like me that was absolutely the icing on the cake. I mean I would’ve watched this series just for that aspect alone but combined with the sci-fi action/adventure? Whoa. I loved how they played with mythology, though. Were there plot holes? Sure. Big enough to toss wormholes through but it didn’t matter to me. It was the fact that they were literally playing games with mythology and kept doing it with such quirky, likeable characters that kept me coming back. Yeah, pure heaven.
Now, finally, the picture I included here is called “Flood” and is a favorite wallpaper because it evokes the spirit of the series. I found it at Stargate Information Archive when I was looking around for Stargate fan sites. There is a wonderful collection of wallpapers among other things there and I went a little crazy downloading them when I discovered it. Hey, it’s what fans do. I also especially like the one called “The Nox”. If you have no idea what that might be about and have to go look, you are not a “Gater” and need to educate yourself. Or let me explain. Just ask. It’s a really great story. 😀
