I binged on the first season of The Orville TV series and fell in love with it. Which completely caught me off guard. I mean I thought I knew what was coming. But it wasn’t at all what I expected.
To be honest, I actually thought of several different titles for this post.
never trust professional critics
Particularly when it comes to science fiction. (And superheroes, too, to some extent.) Personally, I’ve never quite figured out why the “professionals” can be so far off from fan reactions. But there it is. And not just occasionally but they do it a lot.
when something old is new again
I mean who would’ve thought that someone could actually do Star Trek better than, well, Star Trek. Or at least than the Powers That Be in charge of Star Trek. Oh, yeah, fans. Maybe.
This series does it with humor, too. Not comedy, exactly, but honest to goodness humor. About life. It’s like seeing what the Star Trek universe would be like if it hadn’t been so idealized from beginning. If it had been about actual real people. Flaws and all.
And what truly blows me away is that suddenly I’m not sure why it’s such a surprise that it’s good. Seriously, I would love to hear from anyone else who’s seen it to get other reactions. Because I think I’m in shock over this one.
