I’m not all that crazy about sit-coms. Never have been. I mean, when we still had traditional TV access, I would occasionally watch one enough to know the characters. But usually those were the fad-of-the-moment that everyone else was watching too. At least a little. You know the ones you can’t get away from because everyone is talking about them. Think Friends or Happy Days or, oh, yeah, MASH is another good one. But it’s rare that I actually became enough a fan of the average run of the mill sit-com to watch start to finish, every single episode, rain or shine, good or bad.
One of the rare ones I adored was The Nanny starring Fran Drescher. I was hooked from the beginning and watched it all the way to the end. So in recent years I’ve been trying to find it again on streaming services. As far as I can tell, it’s not even available for rent/buy on Amazon Prime. Yeah, I could’ve gone the DVD route up front, but I think I wanted to make sure it wasn’t nostalgia coloring my memories before getting DVDs.
And then a friend told me about Pluto TV. I’ve been checking it out with mixed results. While I’m not impressed with their Live TV side, the On Demand has potential. It also has the first two seasons of The Nanny.
Bingo.
Over the last week or so I started watching a handful of episodes right before bed each night. Absolutely loving it all over again. And also laughing my head off. It’s simply comedy like it should be done.
And it’s most definitely a romance. An oddly believable one considering just how extremely opposite in personality Fran and Maxwell truly are. Okay, yeah, sure, there are some episodes that I immediately decide to skim/skip but for the most part, it’s just what I’m needing right now. Good cleansing laughter in 30 minute doses.
Oh, and Fran’s clothes are simply a feast for the eyes that still work 25+ years later. Just saying.
Revisiting The Nanny has also helped me decide what I want to put on my Christmas list, too. Cause I definitely want to watch the rest again. Soon!
