Apparently bad covers are a problem that is as old as paperback publishing. I ran across an article that, um, beautifully illustrates that point. And it’s about the first US paperback covers for J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit of all things. Barbara Remington’s first cover is truly an exercise in interpreting the idea of The Hobbit, rather than its content, since she was not given a chance to read the book when she received the commission. Even when they are attempting to be dead serious. I ran across a vintage cover of an Agatha Christie book I just had to share because, besides being an old one ($.25?) I hadn’t seen, she’s being strangled by… the Hulk??? Which stopped me dead in my tracks. I mean her skin tone is pretty normal even if she does have a slightly green tint so this isn’t an aging thing going on. The hands strangling her are very green though.Read More →

So, right after Halloween, my son sent the following video to me because he found it fascinating how most of the media “hulking out” (his words) incarnations aren’t that close to the book story: After watching the video, I told him that I’d always thought the 1941 movie with Spencer Tracy, of all people, in the title role has always creeped me out the most because the transformation Dr. Jekyll goes through was way more psychological than other versions I’ve seen. I’ve had a Pinterest account for years but never really did anything on it except find or post the occasional interesting thing. Recently though I found out that Pinterest already contains a wealth of really old paperback covers but they’re kind of scattered. So I’ve started my own “vintage paperback covers” board and started by searching out covers from some old favorites. It’s a beginning and I’ll probably add others from my own collection, too, if they’re not already there.
