or some reasons I love Avatar: The Last Airbender When the original promo for Avatar the Last Airbender (ATLA) first came out I was intrigued. It seemed to have a fairly simple premise with a lot of possibility. So when the pilot episode for it aired on February 21, 2005, I was primed and waiting to watch it. By the time we finished that first episode of ATLA I knew something magical was happening. I just didn’t know how magical it was going to be ultimately until the series was finished. my first 9 reasons for the magic (spoiler free) #10 The bending AKA theRead More →

I’ve been impatiently waiting for the official trailer just like everyone else. Not simply to see more but because I knew it should include the characters interacting. That is a very good test of whether this one has any chance of success or not. And this trailer almost takes my breath away on that count. It’s not just that they appear to have nailed the casting and the world. It’s that they’ve nailed the humor. Let’s be honest here, there is reason that so many people go into watching the original cartoon thinking it’s just a kids show but come away devoted fans for life.Read More →

Fringe

feeling a Fringe rewatch binge building

Fringe is one of those TV series that I wasn’t entirely sure I would like when I first discovered it. Now I usually rewatch it about once a year. I knew it was science fiction before I first watched it but I wasn’t sure what type. To be honest, I’m still not sure how to classify it except to call it mind-bending. Also good. Very very good. Kind of like X-Files on steroids kind of good. X-Files teased aliens invading Earth but never quite proved it. The inability to do that leaves the later seasons kind of flat feeling in a lot of ways. Do I really have to explain why I’m posting about this? Wow, I have to say I’m impressed. The world looks right, the bending looks right (we’ll wait and see if they nail the martial arts too) and they appear to have picked the perfect cast. Now to see if they do the story justice. February 22, 2024, can’t come soon enough.Read More →

It all started when I saw where Richard Moll had passed away. He played Bull Shannon on the original Night Court (1984). And it got me curious enough to dig around & see if it was streaming on anything I had access to. You know, just to check it out and see if it was as funny as I remember. I have never been that big on sit-coms. So, there are really only a few that I watched from beginning to end. I thought Night Court was one of them but wanted to double-check. So I watched the first few episodes. Then a few more.Read More →

Eureka

Jack Carter, Sheriff of Eureka

I just finished a re-watch binge of Eureka, so I had to talk about it. It’s an amazing little (five seasons & 77 episodes) TV series the SyFy channel created in 2006. If you like science fiction, especially lighter science fiction combined with comedy, do give Eureka a try.  Basically the story begins like this:  Colin Ferguson as Jack Carter is Eureka And an absolute jewel as the central character of the series. I’m honestly not sure anyone else could’ve brought Jack Carter to life so well. Particularly as the every-man Sheriff bringing law and order to the chaos that is Eureka. Sure, there are manyRead More →

Because there are two TV series I have to watch releasing seasons then. Well, around then anyway. First up is the new Asoka series which starts on August 23. To be honest, I’m kind of iffy on this one. Sure, I’m curious but I was never that big a fan of The Clone Wars so… we’ll just have to see. Then there is the big one, at least in this family, the second season of The Wheel of Time releases on September 1. So, yeah, lots of new episodes in September.Read More →

Well, I guess I better get back to reading. Although… I’m well ahead of where this new season is supposed to get to, so there’s that. Decisions, decisions. Definitely know what I’ll be watching in September, though. (And maybe October.) My son will see to that. Heh.Read More →

Lately, what I’ve been amazed by is how many new-to-me “quirky” TV mysteries I’ve run across on Britbox through Prime. It must be that time of year or something. I’ve never made a secret of the fact that I love mystery series with a bit of humor and, well, let’s just call it eccentricities to them. And these four have that in spades. So, in the order I found them: Pie in the Sky (1994-1997) This one is an older series that I think I’ve tried before. I liked the premise of a police detective who wants to open his own restaurant but, of course,Read More →

I don’t even remember how I ran across this article. But wow, this list of rules for rebooting classic TV and movie properties should be taken to heart by Hollywood. Especially the last one. Just saying. Seriously. Because that seems to be the way things go lately when something literally flops and it ain’t pretty. Or nice. Yeah, I’m looking at you… VELMA.Read More →

Probably because I don’t have cable or satellite but still. I do have Roku and there are an unbelievable number of shows that can be accessed through it. So have you watched the new Wednesday series on Netflix yet that’s based on the daughter from The Addams Family? If you haven’t, you may be the only one who hasn’t. Just saying. This was really good and I’m not entirely sure why. I know I liked it. My son and I stayed up until around 3 am one night during the holidays to watch all of it. It was one of those “just one more episodes and we’ll stop” situations. Only we didn’t until we were done. So, yeah, I enjoyed it. Although, why? I’m not sure exactly, so I started checking out someRead More →

I recently discovered Bergerac, an older nine season detective TV series on BritBox, that I’ve completely fallen in love with. So much so that several times a week I’ve taken to watching an episode right before I go to sleep. I’m on the third season already so it’s definitely keeping my interest. Bergerac was apparently phenomenally popular during it’s original run time in Britain but this is the first I’ve heard of it. The shocker is that it stars a younger, and extremely good-looking, John Nettles of Midsomer Murders fame. I didn’t connect the main character as being played by Nettles initially because of justRead More →

cliffhangers – good or bad?

Must be something in the air because I ran across two posts related to cliffhangers on the same day recently. First there is this one about the Stargate SG1 writers and the uncertain future of the series in later seasons: Then later that same day I found this: I think overall I tend to avoid cliffhangers. Well, they don’t happen in romance novels very much to begin with. And with streaming nowadays, I usually wait until an entire TV series is complete. Or, at least I wait until another season is added. Problem solved. Of course the real problem is when another season (or book)Read More →
