The most well know and recognized comic book in the history of comics was first published on April 18, 1938 (cover dated June 1938). Inside its pages the world was introduced to Superman, his alter ego Clark Kent as well as Lois Lane. They actually go on a date. It doesn’t go well. At all. Now, when I decided to do a post about the first appearance of Superman I suddenly realized I had never actually read Action Comics #1. I mean, I basically knew what happens in the Superman story in it. Because everyone who is even remotely a Superman fan talks about it.Read More →

I’ve been impatiently waiting for the official trailer just like everyone else. Not simply to see more but because I knew it should include the characters interacting. That is a very good test of whether this one has any chance of success or not. And this trailer almost takes my breath away on that count. It’s not just that they appear to have nailed the casting and the world. It’s that they’ve nailed the humor. Let’s be honest here, there is reason that so many people go into watching the original cartoon thinking it’s just a kids show but come away devoted fans for life.Read More →

At least that’s what it seems like lately. Did you know that there is a new Superman cartoon out on Max called My Adventures with Superman (TV Series 2023– )? It is adorable and very much centered around Lois Lane because it’s her adventures with Superman that are referred to in the title. The first season isn’t finished so I really don’t want to get into it yet other than to say if you can, check it out. Honestly, though, Superman fans are raving about it. What’s fascinating to me is that since it started I’ve run across several really good articles directly related toRead More →

Because there are two TV series I have to watch releasing seasons then. Well, around then anyway. First up is the new Asoka series which starts on August 23. To be honest, I’m kind of iffy on this one. Sure, I’m curious but I was never that big a fan of The Clone Wars so… we’ll just have to see. Then there is the big one, at least in this family, the second season of The Wheel of Time releases on September 1. So, yeah, lots of new episodes in September.Read More →

(originally posted April 17, 2021) possible mild spoilers ahead just saying I really liked this one. A lot more than Godzilla (2014) or Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). To be honest, I remember watching Kong: Skull Island (2017), which is also in this series, but that’s about it. Not sure what that says, but apparently it didn’t make a big impression on me. Of course, I’ve re-watched the other two recently so that may be part of it. Not all though. first there are the battles between the two titans The monster fights in Godzilla vs Kong (2021) are absolutely phenomenal. The way theRead More →

(originally posted July 23, 2019) I just finished reading the last book in Dana Marie Bell’s Maggie’s Grove series, Hour of the Wolf and wow. Just wow. I’m not talking about just the last book. I’m talking about the entire series as a whole. I honestly tried to talk about these stories separately but there’s an overall villain plot in them that is so connected it’s almost impossible not to lump them together to keep from giving away major spoilers. Probably the only way I may try to do some posts on each individual book is to highlight each couple and their relationship. So considerRead More →

Star Wars 1977

Yes, Star Wars was originally released on May 25, 1977. Notice I did not say Star Wars: A New Hope because that was not what it was called then. Anyway, my children and I were talking recently about what made Star Wars such a cultural phenomenon. Looking back it’s really difficult to explain exactly what it was like when the first movie came out. That has less to do with the world at time than it does with the movie itself, I think. No one knew what to expect and what we got certainly wasn’t anything like what we might’ve imagined. So where to start?Read More →

Over the holiday weekend my son & I watched a couple of Batman animated movies we’d never seen. One of them, Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, wasn’t bad. In fact, I really enjoyed the Victorian and slightly steampunk take. The solution to the “mystery” was, well, odd and kind of out of left field. But the story was nice and the setting spectacular, especially for Batman. However, the second one we watched is where the title of this post comes in. I mean, really, about half-way through I turned to my son and asked, “What am I watching?” That he didn’t have an answer was noRead More →

This is an excellent video about some of the “forgotten” superheroes. Some more forgotten than others. I knew about most of them. Read some of them. Have seen a lot of them in adaptations. The one I probably know the least about, though, is Doc Savage. And the explanation of his “powers” starting at the 14:07 mark about blew my mind. Seriously, they should’ve given the guy more abilities. Major eye-roll.Read More →

Because suddenly it’s very okay for a superhero to have families & children. Well, that’s not to say that there haven’t always been superhero families that pass their hero mantles, er, masks and/or capes down through the generations. Most notably the very first costumed superhero, The Phantom, was flat-out a “legacy” hero. We’re talking about twenty plus generations for The Phantom, so, yeah, definitely a family thing going on. Now, plenty of superheroes share their responsibilities with others in their inner circle. There we’re normally talking side-kicks or sidekicks who grown into completely new roles. Most famous? Batman’s sidekick, Dick Grayson, outgrowing Robin and becomingRead More →

My son and I watched it last weekend and I’m still processing just how good this was. So much so that while I want to do a post breaking down all my thoughts about it, it will probably be a long one. Possibly more than one post. And seriously filled with spoilers. So while that’s developing in my head and notes I did want to say something right away. This movie is absolutely fantastic. Does it have faults? Sure. It’s 4 hours long. How could it not have some slip in? However, the time flies because of how good it is so, really, not aRead More →

I had planned to post about something else this week but realizing the new Superman & Lois TV series had started last week changed all that. In a heartbeat. After watching the first two episodes, I have to say that I’m impressed with where this series is going. To be honest, I’ve only seen the two main actors as Superman and Lois here and there during Arrowverse crossovers so I wasn’t at all sure what to expect. But they are doing a really good job here. The set up is that this is a more mature Clark/Superman and Lois who have two teenage sons. Twins,Read More →

And, yeah, I did watch it but I ain’t talking about it. So I found a review that says pretty much what I’m thinking and more:  To be fair I have actually read some good comments online about it. For the most part, I think it’s just so different from the first Wonder Woman movie that it suffers – a lot – by comparison. Like, really a lot.Read More →

I can’t believe I’ve never mentioned Megamind here. I actually had to do a site search to convince myself I hadn’t.  Anyway, I re-watched it recently and, boy, is it a gem of an animated movie about superheroes. I even got into a debate with my son about whether it’s a flat-out spoof of the superhero genre. I don’t know, but after thinking about it some more, I think it’s more in the line of a superhero fractured fairy tale. Showing my age there, I know, but there it is. I say fractured fairy tale because in this story the villain becomes the hero whoRead More →

I’ve been meaning to comment on this find for a long time and it keeps slipping through the cracks. Several years ago I ran across an article or link or something that led me to a site called the Fortress of Solitude Super Network. Bet ya can’t guess what it is all about about.  Anyway, one specific feature there blew… my… mind. I mean seriously blew me away. Apparently there is a lost comic from very early in the careers of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators of Superman. The Powers That Be would not let them publish it. Wonder why?   Well, theyRead More →
