originally posted on February 4, 2010 first big book reading memories As far as I can remember, my big book reading started at around age eleven, circa 1970. The very first adult romance, I ever remember reading was a hardback copy of Ladybird by Grace Livingston Hill. If I remember correctly our pastor’s wife gave it to my mother. Calling it an adult book is probably a misnomer. I’m pretty sure young adult romances didn’t exist back then. I read and collected many of her books during that decade of my life. They were interesting in their own way. My biggest memory of them, though, are pagesRead More →

I almost laughed in her face – figuratively speaking. 😀 I mean, come on. One, much more eloquent people than me have tried to explain it. Most of them did great jobs, too. And still gotten lost in their own words. Two, sometimes, I’m not sure there is an answer. Then I stopped backing away and realized that what she was asking. Ten years ago I wrote a series of posts called Ten Nights of Love. Wow! I honestly can’t believe it’s been 10 years. So I decided this is a very good time to take them down and refresh/re-edit/reformat the whole thing. Starting in one week one of those posts will go back online every Wednesday. Ten years ago I posted them daily to end on Valentine’s Day. This time I wanted to spread them out so I can post other things, too. Also this time, I’ll follow up with an addendum post (posts?) about my “reading” in the 2010s. Then end with an updated CoverRead More →

What’s your popular fiction “comforting anchor”?

I’ve decided to focus this month on working on some “behind the scenes” projects and general maintenance so what posts I do manage to write will probably be fairly short. Mainly, there’s one project I’ve been thinking about for a while which is creating pages for My Favorite Things so the last week or so I’ve been playing around with how I want to format those. Another project I’m working on is expanding the About page.  In the meantime, I ran across an article about combining genres and thought I’d share because I thought the opening paragraph was very intriguing:  From a writer’s perspective, theRead More →

I’ve been wanting to rewatch this one for a while and when I found out Fringe was on Prime through IMDB (who knew they had their own channel?) I started an immediate binge. Seriously I watched or read very little of anything else while binging on it except for the occasional palate cleanser cozy mystery episode here and there.  I’m kind of blown away, too. I mean I remember liking it a lot when I first watched it but it seems even better than I remember. It’s only 5 seasons, or 4 1/2 since the last is only a half season, but it packs a lotRead More →

The greatest lover of the silent screen was, of course, inspired by a romance novel

Because what else would it be inspired by? Don’t believe me? So, I was browsing around on Pinterest and ran across this: I’ve heard about this one being one of the earliest genre romances of the 20th century. Which meant it was old enough it probably had a plain hardback cover originally but I was curious as to what the original paperback one might have been. Okay, that’s more like it but I sill don’t know if that’s the first. Another thing I’ve heard about this book is that it was the inspiration, or at least one of them, for the early silent movie sheikRead More →

Mulder and Scully on The X-Files

I was never a Mulder & Scully shipper when the series was airing. I always saw their relationship as soul mates but platonic ones. And that’s the way I remember them. So as I’m re-watching the series, I realize I had forgotten how flirty they were in the early seasons of X-Files. Okay flirty might not be the right word but I don’t know what else to call it especially on Scully’s part. Mulder is semi-oblivious. He has his moments but they are more blink and you miss them than Scully’s.  Right now I’m at the end of season 2 and they seem to be settling into the relationship I do remember. It’ll be interesting toRead More →

Okay, just for the record this post will probably contain some slight spoilers but, seriously, anyone who doesn’t have some idea of the major beats of this story has been living in a cave for the last three decades.  Anyway, my children got me these two videos for Mother’s Day. Boy, do they know their mother.  My son and I ended up watching it together on Mother’s Day and the only thing that really threw us was starting out with basically the New 52 Superman in The Death of Superman… who was hooked on and apparently dating Lois Lane. Not that we had any quibbleRead More →

I recently ran across a new to me website that I’ve fallen in love with – The Silver Petticoat Review: Romance in Entertainment. What I love about it is that it feeds my “and I want some romance in what I watch” craving with regards to video fare. To be perfectly honest I usually don’t seek out stuff on TV and in the movies for romance. If it’s called a romance, half the time I’ll be leery of it in the first place. But I like to know what’s out there at the same time.Read More →

In A Badger Way by Shelly Laurenston came out today and I bought it on ebook the second I woke up. I only realized yesterday the hero was Shen Li, the panda shifter from Bite Me. I think my brain just exploded. I honestly never thought she’d give Shen his own book. Also, this definitely means I get more Vic for sure & possibly Livy from my top favorite in the Pride series, Bite Me. Double yah! Now back to reading. Read More →

For the last week or so I’ve been rereading one of my all-time favorite romance series – Shelly Laurenston’s Pride shifter series. I’m currently on the last and my favorite Bite Me with Vic and Livy. Yum.  One of the reasons I like her writing and that series in particular is that it makes me laugh. Which for me is comfort food. And after the month I’ve had with one illness after another that’s the antidote I needed. Other readers may want to cry. I want to laugh my head off. Now I will admit that her characters and her humor aren’t going to be for everyone.Read More →

Seriously, I want to know.  Because I was reading yet another romance-  You know actually this one might not have been a romance. It might very well have been one of a cozy mystery series I’ve been checking out but since I didn’t write the title of the book down when this irritation stuck yet again I don’t know. It could’ve been a romance because it’s something I’ve noticed in them a lot over the years. Like really a lot. The exact pet peeve I’m ranting about?  “tiny” 5’5″ heroines and “large” 6’4″ heroes Now here’s my issue with that description. I’m 5’5″. My sonRead More →

(Years ago when I was very active in the Lois & Clark fandom, I put a list together of all my favorite quotes from that show. And then it grew. There are probably a few more that I could add to it because I know I don’t have every episode represented. I may even one day create a video with all these clips. But, just for fun, I thought I’d throw it out there.) “Lois is . . . well, she’s complicated. Domineering. Uncompromising. Pigheaded.” … “Brilliant.” (THE PILOT) “What he can’t do it doesn’t matter. It’s the idea of Superman. Someone to believe in.Read More →
