Journey to Love

Travel to romance & mystery

(originally published June 16, 2010) A post Maili wrote a month or so ago about exotic locales in romances got me nostalgic for some of the “travelogue romances” of yore. Now, granted there were some good points made during that discussion about the difference between stories about visitors and actual natives of various locations but I still have fond memories of some of the old series romances that featured these types of stories. Prime examples of this sub-genre are the books written by author Glenna Finley. Although a lot of Finley’s contemporary books do take place in the Pacific Northwest, many of them are scatteredRead More →

Bite Me by Shelly Laurenston

why I love Shelly Laurenston’s Pride Stories series

originally published October 23, 2020 So, romances & connected series? Romance as a genre has always had, well, a funny relationship with connected series. The major reason is because by definition (most of the time anyway) there is a different couple in each book. So, what usually happens in a romance series is that the reader is dumped into a “community” that provides fertile ground for the author to find fresh couples to work on in each new book. Community can be defined as whatever works for the author, though.  When I was actively reading non-paranormal contemporaries I loved series set in small towns. SoRead More →

Fringe

feeling a Fringe rewatch binge building

Fringe is one of those TV series that I wasn’t entirely sure I would like when I first discovered it. Now I usually rewatch it about once a year. I knew it was science fiction before I first watched it but I wasn’t sure what type. To be honest, I’m still not sure how to classify it except to call it mind-bending. Also good. Very very good. Kind of like X-Files on steroids kind of good. X-Files teased aliens invading Earth but never quite proved it. The inability to do that leaves the later seasons kind of flat feeling in a lot of ways. I recently posted about finding a website devoted to Emilie Loring. So, I’ve been following and enjoying it and a recent post there is a list of Loring’s books by month. File this under “things I didn’t know I needed” because, wow, I really like this idea. Now I want this type of list for all my favorite authors. Hmm.Read More →

Emilie Loring was born on September 5, 1866. Since I wanted to do a post for her birthday I started digging around online to see what I could find. Jackpot! I discovered that she has a biographer named Patti Bender. Who has a website and a blog. All about Emilie Loring. Lots of browsing commenced. And, of course, I had to share. Most of the romance readers I know of that have even heard of Emilie Loring, much less read her books, started when they were very, very young. So it doesn’t surprise me that this was on the home page of Dr. Patti Bender’sRead More →

I just finished a re-watch binge of Eureka, so I had to talk about it. It’s an amazing little (five seasons & 77 episodes) TV series the SyFy channel created in 2006. If you like science fiction, especially lighter science fiction combined with comedy, do give Eureka a try.  Basically the story begins like this:  Colin Ferguson as Jack Carter is Eureka And an absolute jewel as the central character of the series. I’m honestly not sure anyone else could’ve brought Jack Carter to life so well. Particularly as the every-man Sheriff bringing law and order to the chaos that is Eureka. Sure, there are manyRead More →

(originally posted July 23, 2019) I just finished reading the last book in Dana Marie Bell’s Maggie’s Grove series, Hour of the Wolf and wow. Just wow. I’m not talking about just the last book. I’m talking about the entire series as a whole. I honestly tried to talk about these stories separately but there’s an overall villain plot in them that is so connected it’s almost impossible not to lump them together to keep from giving away major spoilers. Probably the only way I may try to do some posts on each individual book is to highlight each couple and their relationship. So considerRead More →

A mystery that was almost more romance than mystery

(first posted March 12, 2021) But that’s not the most intriguing part. It was originally published in 1925. By a man. Oh, and there’s more. It’s the first Charlie Chan novel by Earl Derr Biggers titled The House Without a Key.  As far as I know I’ve seen most of the Charlie Chan movies many times. I actually like them. Now I know that those movies are a point of contention regarding the fact that a white man was cast, not once but multiple times, as an Asian. It’s a valid point. It’s also how things were done then. However the thing that’s always struckRead More →

Well, if it’s a really good flashlight, that is. So, a couple of weeks ago we had a high wind event with winds that reached lower hurricane levels. This is a very unusual occurrence for our area seeing as we are in western Kentucky. There wasn’t a lot of widespread structural damage but our electric grid took a major beating as several hundred poles came down. As a result we had no electricity from mid-day Friday thru late Sunday afternoon. We were probably lucky to have it back that fast, too. But, seriously, by the second day of our blackout I was totally bored. I finallyRead More →

I was reminded this week in a big way about my Ten Night of Love post series by something on the All About Romance blog. After I commented there with a link back I thought I should look them over and make sure they are still presentable. I gave them a serious technical edit and format review in 2020 but the occasional quick check never hurts. Which led to this “It’s almost Valentine’s Day” reminder that they are on the site. Full list of current Ten Nights of Love posts (in reading order and including some posts I added as addendums to the original series):Read More →

Because I have so many things I want to do on the site right now but my life has been chaos lately. Seriously it’s gotten so bad that I finally had to sit down and go over the “in-progress” stuff I’m supposed to be working on for the site. Mainly because I couldn’t remember some of them and wanted to make sure I still wanted to work on them right now. Oye.  Which kind of turned into an idea for a post. And highlight a post on the site that talks about her backlist of books. And of course there is also the All My Favorites > Glenna Finley page. Recently, I noticed there is a new Jayne Castle (AKA Jayne Ann Krentz) futuristic Harmony book coming out in November. That got me in the mood to do a reread of that entire series. There are about a dozen so there’s plenty of time to reread them all. And, hopefully, talk about them here in some depth. the world of Harmony So consider this an introduction to the larger series. In Bridal Jitters she first uses the world of Harmony, a lost colony of Earth, as the setting. The time is roughly 200 years after the connection to Earth was lost. In that time, theRead More →

Getting the first three was easy because they are on Google Books for just a couple of dollars each.  But when I got to the fourth in the list, things became complicated. Or so I thought. Well, put it this way, the last three aren’t available individually on Google Books or Amazon’s Kindle. So I dug around online and realized there are several “collections” of his books. At least in print. The prices are all over the place, though. I finally hit pay dirt. I discovered The Greatest Mysteries of Earl Derr Biggers: 11 Titles In One Volume on Google Play. For 99 cents. I wasn’t even sure I was going to do a post this week. Or over the holidays. Because to be honest, I’m in a big reading mood. Okay a flat out binge of just about all my Shelly Laurenston books. Some other authors too.  And every time I think about writing a post on any of them… well, I go back to reading instead. So I think I may simply work on background stuff for the next week or two. Anyway, don’t expect any in-depth posts until after the New Year. Maybe links. Maybe nothing. Whatever.  However, and speaking of links, I found out somethingRead More →
