So, the other day I was cleaning out some things I’d clipped to Evernote in hopes of one day using them in a post. You know how it is, you save a lot but use very little. Eventually it becomes the electronic equivalent of hoarding and some extreme deep cleaning is necessary. Anyway, I ran across the following link and thought, huh, why haven’t I ever talked about that one? Because I use it all the time. Seriously, I’ve had this one saved for years. I’m not simply talking about bookmarking the link either. I clipped the entire first page and really do refer backRead More →

Zack Synder Justice League

Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) initial reactions (non-spoiler)

My son and I watched it last weekend and I’m still processing just how good this was. So much so that while I want to do a post breaking down all my thoughts about it, it will probably be a long one. Possibly more than one post. And seriously filled with spoilers. So while that’s developing in my head and notes I did want to say something right away. This movie is absolutely fantastic. Does it have faults? Sure. It’s 4 hours long. How could it not have some slip in? However, the time flies because of how good it is so, really, not aRead More →

I will freely admit that watching The Mandalorian with my son has revived (from the dead pretty much) my love of Star Wars. There was a time when the kids were little that periodically as a family we’d spend Saturday nights re-watching the entire original trilogy. Or try to at any rate. So the love has always been there. Just unconscious lately.  So, yes, because of The Mandalorian I’ve been thinking about re-watching them all. And possibly tossing in some of the animated series. But the immediate question is in what order?  Well, I found an interesting article on that one.  I may have toRead More →

Swashbucklers, anyone?

Over the holidays I re-watched The Court Jester (1955) starring Danny Kaye & Basil Rathbone. It’s my favorite Danny Kaye movie and very much a spoof of other more serious swashbucklers. Like The Adventures Of Robin Hood (1938) starring Errol Flynn & Basil Rathbone that I also managed to re-watch over the holidays. Yeah, I was in that kind of mood. Anyway, it got me curious so I looked online to see if I could find any lists of the best movie sword fights. There are a lot of lists out there because apparently it’s a popular question. The one I liked the best had moreRead More →

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) – I just can’t even go there

And, yeah, I did watch it but I ain’t talking about it. So I found a review that says pretty much what I’m thinking and more:  To be fair I have actually read some good comments online about it. For the most part, I think it’s just so different from the first Wonder Woman movie that it suffers – a lot – by comparison. Like, really a lot.Read More →

Stargate SG1

why I love Stargate a lot more than Star Trek nowadays

I’ve been thinking about this for awhile, off and on. Most recently while re-watching some Stargate SG1 episodes. For the umpteenth time.  And it’s not that I don’t still love Star Trek! Because I’m a longtime fan of almost all variations of Star Trek. My favorite is probably Star Trek: The Next Generation. For a lot of reasons. Just saying that up front before the next paragraph.  However while I “grew up” with Star Trek and love it, I think I may have outgrown it. Why? The short answer? The Star Trek universe can get a bit… well, I don’t want to say repetitive but that’sRead More →

thinking deep thoughts while healing I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately while recovering from surgery. One topic that kept coming up is how I mentally divide most stuff into “re-enjoyable” and “once and done”. It kept coming up because I kept looking at my shelves and trying to find something to re-enjoy. I say re-enjoy because I’m not just talking about reading here. There’s also watching and playing. Okay mostly watching for the last few weeks. But I have gotten some reading in too. Games not so much because, you know, moving hurts. Much better to just sit and absorb. No thinking orRead More →

first posted October 30, 2018 I thought it was time I made a list, kinda, of all the Scooby-Doo videos I have in my collection. So, right after Halloween, my son sent the following video to me because he found it fascinating how most of the media “hulking out” (his words) incarnations aren’t that close to the book story: After watching the video, I told him that I’d always thought the 1941 movie with Spencer Tracy, of all people, in the title role has always creeped me out the most because the transformation Dr. Jekyll goes through was way more psychological than other versions I’ve seen. I’m not even certain they did all that much in terms of makeup changes when he transformed. It seems to be mostly acting. IRead More →

Because it’s Halloween, I got in the mood to rewatch the Harry Potter movies. Then I decided to record my random observations, at least during the first movie. Read and remember. That is if you’ve read the books or seen the movies. If not– SPOILERS AHEAD! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! I’ve organized this according to the scene titles from the DVD for clarity. Also because I wanted to post this on Halloween I ran out of time and only linked to a few images so I may come back and add more later.  1. Quick WOT update first. I finished Book 3 The Shadow Rising and started on Book 4 The Fires of Heaven after a weekend break. I’m working on a WOT related post where I interview my son about being a die-hard fan of the series but that’s on hold until I can pin him down to talk about it. Now on to one of my personal fan obsessions. (Although not as obsessed as he is about WOT.) I love this print and want it for Christmas! When I first ran across it I didn’t see the Dean Cain Superman so I passed over it. Then IRead More →

The greatest lover of the silent screen was, of course, inspired by a romance novel

Because what else would it be inspired by? Don’t believe me? So, I was browsing around on Pinterest and ran across this: I’ve heard about this one being one of the earliest genre romances of the 20th century. Which meant it was old enough it probably had a plain hardback cover originally but I was curious as to what the original paperback one might have been. Okay, that’s more like it but I sill don’t know if that’s the first. Another thing I’ve heard about this book is that it was the inspiration, or at least one of them, for the early silent movie sheikRead More →

RIP Doris Day

I grew up watching her movies and TV series because my mother was a huge fan so I’ve been trying to put together a post on her for the last week or so. Then I ran across an article that pretty much says everything I’d say so here it is: Very, very few classic film stars still remain with us. With the passing of Doris Day in May, that number sadly becomes even more minuscule. So, today we remember wonderful Doris Day movies in tribute. 12 MOVIES WITH DORIS DAY, QUEEN OF ROMANTIC COMEDIES My personal favorite is probably a close tie between Glass BottomRead More →

romances and monsters?

This isn’t something that comes up a lot but I have a thing for the old style black and white monster movies. So here’s a question, are there any romances out there with monsters in them a la Universal Studios old style monsters? We all know there are a very large gaggle of vampires, shifters and what have you in romances nowadays, but they don’t really count as those old style monsters. So are there any? Pretty sure I’ve run across a Frankenstein type in a romance in the past but the others?  And the reason this came up is the following, which kind ofRead More →
