originally posted on February 12, 2010 those early e-book covers are fun Next up here I have a special treat. I was digging around some old electronic files recently. And I found some things that I treasure almost as much as some of my old paperbacks. A lot of people nowadays know about a book called Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair. But do they know about or have the original story that appeared as an e-book called Command Performance? From before she made it to the big time in print? I do, plus several of her other books in their original e-book form. 😀 divingRead More →

I binged on the first season of The Orville TV series and fell in love with it. Which completely caught me off guard. I mean I thought I knew what was coming. But it wasn’t at all what I expected. To be honest, I actually thought of several different titles for this post.  never trust professional critics Particularly when it comes to science fiction. (And superheroes, too, to some extent.) Personally, I’ve never quite figured out why the “professionals” can be so far off from fan reactions. But there it is. And not just occasionally but they do it a lot. when something old isRead More →

Over the holidays, my son and I managed to binge on not one, not two, but three first seasons of original streaming TV series. I may never get my sleep schedule back in shape but at least he’s gone back to work and won’t be dragging me into late night binges anytime soon. I hope.  Anyway, the three series we binged were all good. Either that or I’m sleep deprived and lacking in judgement. Which is why I’m keeping this short and may write more on each individual series after I catch up on sleep. The Witcher (Netflix) This one was at my son’s insistenceRead More →

I’ve decided to focus this month on working on some “behind the scenes” projects and general maintenance so what posts I do manage to write will probably be fairly short. Mainly, there’s one project I’ve been thinking about for a while which is creating pages for My Favorite Things so the last week or so I’ve been playing around with how I want to format those. Another project I’m working on is expanding the About page.  In the meantime, I ran across an article about combining genres and thought I’d share because I thought the opening paragraph was very intriguing:  From a writer’s perspective, theRead More →

I ran across “Doctor Who: The Time War Was Genius (& Moffat Made It Even Better)” on Screen Rants and was left rather bemused. Maybe because Screen Rants is rather hit and miss with me. But I agree with this one even though I hadn’t thought about it that way before. Put it this way, I’m a big fan of the new Doctor Who but have tried to watch the classic version and just… can’t. Maybe if I skipped to later seasons it would work for me but starting at the very beginning does not. Nope. No way.  I’d never really thought about how the TimeRead More →

I’ve been wanting to rewatch this one for a while and when I found out Fringe was on Prime through IMDB (who knew they had their own channel?) I started an immediate binge. Seriously I watched or read very little of anything else while binging on it except for the occasional palate cleanser cozy mystery episode here and there.  I’m kind of blown away, too. I mean I remember liking it a lot when I first watched it but it seems even better than I remember. It’s only 5 seasons, or 4 1/2 since the last is only a half season, but it packs a lotRead More →

Yes, I do love the original, SG1, very much. Multiple rewatchings to the point of starting to rate individual episodes. In a pinch, I can watch Atlantis but it’s not my favorite. Universe does not exist for me. Just saying. So I was very interest when I ran across this video about the history of this beloved science fiction franchise: This the first of three parts and I enjoyed all of them. I think you can also check on the channel they’re on for a video that compiles them into one but that’s like an hour long so fair warning.Read More →

I love look at old paperback book covers. The older the better. Sometime I love them. Sometimes they are just downright weird. And sometimes I go, ooo-kay, what is this?!? I want to know more. I think. Like this one that isn’t even that old, relatively speaking:Read More →

While I was on vacation (hence the lack of posts recently) I found out Babylon 5 was streaming on Amazon Prime now and I immediately started binging on it. As in being on vacation but not traveling so have some time to kill and suddenly the only thing I’m doing besides eating and sleeping is watching this show type binging. You know it’s a lot easier to binge shows that only have 13 episode per season… with Babylon 5 we’re talking at least 20 episodes so it’s taking awhile. Needless to say vacation’s over and I’m still binging when I have the time. So far I’veRead More →

I like to rewatch and reread things. I know this. It’s like a craving to revisit favorites at times. Lately I’ve been in the mood to rewatch the tv series Fringe. The problem is that it’s not available on any streaming service that I have access to. At least that I’ve been able to find. You know when I first started watching that series, I wasn’t even sure I was going to like it. But I did and it’s become one of my all time favorites. Didn’t hurt that it has a very strong, if quirky, romance in it.Read More →

Or maybe not. I’m still mulling it over. First off, I’ve had a lot going on lately but I have been reading and lurking here and there. One of the esoteric “there’s” that I allow my inner self are various design sites just for the sometimes inspiring, sometimes amusing but almost always “oh, wow” images that pop up. Just recently I ran across a brand new blog to check out along those lines: The Steampunk Home I believe that Steampunk is more than just brass and watchparts. It’s finding a way to combine the past and the future in an aesthetic pleasing yet still punkish way.Read More →

A couple of weeks ago, Heather from The Galaxy Express approached me and asked if I’d be interested in participating in a round robin type feature on SF site discussing SF romances. I’ll be honest, I was kind of hesitant at first because I don’t read all that much science fiction. But I decided to at least think about it and give it a try. Final participants include Linnea Sinclair, Jacqueline Lichtenberg, Angela James, Susan Grant, Michael Banks, B.B. Medos (me), Elizabeth Hand, Laurie Green, Lisa Paitz Spindler, Sasha Knight, Sandra McDonald–and, of course, Heather. This is what resulted. The topic? From Star Wars toRead More →

A new Doctor Who begins tonight on BBC America played by Matt Smith. Well, technically, I think it’s already started in Britain several weeks ago but beggars can’t be choosers. 😉 Yeah, I’m now definitely hooked on this long running science fiction series. It all started around Christmas and New Years with the marathons they did as they were wrapping up the run of the last incarnation of the character played by David Tennant. I think I over indulged but I finally started to see the fascination so many have for this character and series. I mean, what we have here, basically is a character whoRead More →

I know this because I am one. My son knows this because he is a male who has dealt with two female fans, me and his sister. In fact, we got into a discussion about obsessive sci-fi fandoms just the other day after he ran across a Doctor Who forum that I think actually scared him a little at the degree of, um, obsessiveness. Doctor Who has been around for a lot of years and undergone a lot of, er, regenerations. Deadly combination for obssessive fans. Anyone care to speculate on who is worse Star Trek or Doctor Who fans? Not me. 😉 All of which musingRead More →

One of my favorite blogs to visit in recent months has become The Galaxy Express and Heather over there has been busy this last week. Here’s a juicy tidbit from one post: George R.R. Martin (A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE) and legendary SF/F anthology editor Gardner Dozois recently announced the table of contents for their anthology, SONGS OF LOVE AND DEATH: Tales of Star-Crossed Love. This tome will feature stories blending fantasy, science fiction, and romance! And what a lineup!
