Fringe

feeling a Fringe rewatch binge building

Fringe is one of those TV series that I wasn’t entirely sure I would like when I first discovered it. Now I usually rewatch it about once a year. I knew it was science fiction before I first watched it but I wasn’t sure what type. To be honest, I’m still not sure how to classify it except to call it mind-bending. Also good. Very very good. Kind of like X-Files on steroids kind of good. X-Files teased aliens invading Earth but never quite proved it. The inability to do that leaves the later seasons kind of flat feeling in a lot of ways. I just finished a re-watch binge of Eureka, so I had to talk about it. It’s an amazing little (five seasons & 77 episodes) TV series the SyFy channel created in 2006. If you like science fiction, especially lighter science fiction combined with comedy, do give Eureka a try.  Basically the story begins like this:  Colin Ferguson as Jack Carter is Eureka And an absolute jewel as the central character of the series. I’m honestly not sure anyone else could’ve brought Jack Carter to life so well. Particularly as the every-man Sheriff bringing law and order to the chaos that is Eureka. Sure, there are manyRead More →

Because there are two TV series I have to watch releasing seasons then. Well, around then anyway. First up is the new Asoka series which starts on August 23. To be honest, I’m kind of iffy on this one. Sure, I’m curious but I was never that big a fan of The Clone Wars so… we’ll just have to see. Then there is the big one, at least in this family, the second season of The Wheel of Time releases on September 1. So, yeah, lots of new episodes in September.Read More →

(originally posted May 22, 2021) Lately I’ve been in a weird mood movie-wise. I think it’s partly that Prime has been pushing random superhero and/or adventure movies with maybe a dash of science fiction tossed in for good measure to the front of my recommendations. Gee, I wonder why they would ever think I’d like those? Thing is that they’re all stand-alone and not truly deserving of their own post. So I thought I’d tell you about the ones I’ve seen recently with a small snippet of the listed IMBd descriptions. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984) Description: “Adventurer, brain surgeon,Read More →

Probably because I don’t have cable or satellite but still. I do have Roku and there are an unbelievable number of shows that can be accessed through it. Anyway, I may have to dig this one out of the ether to watch. It sounds right up my alley. Well, when I’m not binging on detective series.Read More →

Yes, zones. Plural. When I’m in the mood to read, romance novels are my favorite pick. I have authors and series that I’ve read so many times I could probably recite some of them. Since this entire site is devoted to that activity, I won’t go into any particulars here. When I’m in the mood to play, my favorite games bounce somewhere between building and adventure quest games. Which is honestly a weird place to be. Put it this way, I love the stories and puzzles of quest type games but can easily spend hours on good building games. Put the two together and I’mRead More →

Because I have so many things I want to do on the site right now but my life has been chaos lately. Seriously it’s gotten so bad that I finally had to sit down and go over the “in-progress” stuff I’m supposed to be working on for the site. Mainly because I couldn’t remember some of them and wanted to make sure I still wanted to work on them right now. Oye.  Which kind of turned into an idea for a post. Recently, I noticed there is a new Jayne Castle (AKA Jayne Ann Krentz) futuristic Harmony book coming out in November. That got me in the mood to do a reread of that entire series. There are about a dozen so there’s plenty of time to reread them all. And, hopefully, talk about them here in some depth. the world of Harmony So consider this an introduction to the larger series. In Bridal Jitters she first uses the world of Harmony, a lost colony of Earth, as the setting. The time is roughly 200 years after the connection to Earth was lost. In that time, theRead More →

So, yeah, this week I’m doing a quick update post because we’ve been hit by the winter storm here in western Kentucky that’s affecting most of the country. And basically means that everything stops for us. Now what we have on the ground might not look like much to those to the north but for us it’s bad. Cause we don’t do winter storms well at all. It’s not so much a mind-set problem either. It’s more that we don’t get enough of them to put a lot of equipment to deal with them in the budgets that matter. Which means we kind of limpRead More →

I will freely admit that watching The Mandalorian with my son has revived (from the dead pretty much) my love of Star Wars. There was a time when the kids were little that periodically as a family we’d spend Saturday nights re-watching the entire original trilogy. Or try to at any rate. So the love has always been there. Just unconscious lately.  So, yes, because of The Mandalorian I’ve been thinking about re-watching them all. And possibly tossing in some of the animated series. But the immediate question is in what order?  Well, I found an interesting article on that one.  I may have toRead More →

I haven’t had a lot of time to work on posts this week because… holiday season. But I ran across an excellent post regarding one of my favorite SG1 episodes and thought I’d share. Okay, let’s face it, Window of Opportunity is probably everyone’s favorite. Or at least every fan’s favorite. It’s just perfection. And reading (and watching) the background behind how this one came about is absolutely fascinating. First the post for you to go read: If you’re interested, make sure to watch the embedded video for even more details. As I mentioned in a recent post, I recently finished a pretty much yearly rewatch of Stargate SG1. Even the follow-up movie Arc of Truth. The only thing I haven’t rewatched yet is the Continuum movie. Not totally sure I’m going to, either, because, not my favorite.  Anyway, all this Stargate binging got me to thinking that I needed to work on a favorites page for one of my all-time favorite TV series. So that’s been my focus for this week and Stargate (TV series) is now a page. While doing some research for that, though, I ran across a few videos I wanted toRead More →

Stargate SG1

why I love Stargate a lot more than Star Trek nowadays

I’ve been thinking about this for awhile, off and on. Most recently while re-watching some Stargate SG1 episodes. For the umpteenth time.  And it’s not that I don’t still love Star Trek! Because I’m a longtime fan of almost all variations of Star Trek. My favorite is probably Star Trek: The Next Generation. For a lot of reasons. Just saying that up front before the next paragraph.  However while I “grew up” with Star Trek and love it, I think I may have outgrown it. Why? The short answer? The Star Trek universe can get a bit… well, I don’t want to say repetitive but that’sRead More →

And surviving staying at home.  Well, mostly. Between recurring gallbladder symptoms and computer problems, I haven’t gotten a lot of writing done for the site. So, I’m falling back to an old standby and doing quick links. Some of them will be shared from apps on my phone so they will be very bare bones. But I am determined to get back in the groove.  Recently I got in the mood to watch the entire original Star Wars trilogy. It is so good. The word classic doesn’t even do it justice. I think timeless might be a better description. It’s simply the Star Wars.  Also my sonRead More →
