Awhile back I was looking up information on Agatha Christie, I think. Honestly not sure which author I was looking up. Anyway, I ran across this post and immediately saved it because, wow, that’s a lot of information in a small package. Basically, it’s a quick list of older biographies of well-known mystery writers. So, I thought I’d share. Happy hunting.Read More →

I saw on my calendar that today is Agatha Christie’s birthday and wanted to post something. The woman’s first book was published over 100 years ago, Mysterious Affair at Styles, 1920. Anything that could be said has already been said. Then I found an extremely well put together official website for her works, The Home of Agatha Christie. The site includes a lengthy biography I thoroughly enjoyed reading. It begins with this image and paragraph (scroll down a little from where the link takes you): Seriously, this is a website a fan could spend hours on so, go… enjoy. Then curl up and read oneRead More →

Jack Carter, Sheriff of Eureka

I just finished a re-watch binge of Eureka, so I had to talk about it. It’s an amazing little (five seasons & 77 episodes) TV series the SyFy channel created in 2006. If you like science fiction, especially lighter science fiction combined with comedy, do give Eureka a try.  Basically the story begins like this:  Colin Ferguson as Jack Carter is Eureka And an absolute jewel as the central character of the series. I’m honestly not sure anyone else could’ve brought Jack Carter to life so well. Particularly as the every-man Sheriff bringing law and order to the chaos that is Eureka. Sure, there are manyRead More →

(originally posted June 30, 2022) I am a big fan of Scooby Doo. Not in the fanatical sense but definitely in the “Scooby Doo is comfort food for me” camp.  So usually I downright devour any series or movie they put out. Well, unless they’re absolutely ridiculous. Looking at you Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue! That one is just too weird to watch. ‘Nuff said. But when Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated first came out, I actually didn’t like it. At all. In fact, I could easily say I actively hated it. And wondered what the creators were smoking. (Oddly not in the same wayRead More →

(originally posted July 23, 2019) I just finished reading the last book in Dana Marie Bell’s Maggie’s Grove series, Hour of the Wolf and wow. Just wow. I’m not talking about just the last book. I’m talking about the entire series as a whole. I honestly tried to talk about these stories separately but there’s an overall villain plot in them that is so connected it’s almost impossible not to lump them together to keep from giving away major spoilers. Probably the only way I may try to do some posts on each individual book is to highlight each couple and their relationship. So considerRead More →

More quirky TV mystery series

Lately, what I’ve been amazed by is how many new-to-me “quirky” TV mysteries I’ve run across on Britbox through Prime. It must be that time of year or something. I’ve never made a secret of the fact that I love mystery series with a bit of humor and, well, let’s just call it eccentricities to them. And these four have that in spades. So, in the order I found them: Pie in the Sky (1994-1997) This one is an older series that I think I’ve tried before. I liked the premise of a police detective who wants to open his own restaurant but, of course,Read More →

A mystery that was almost more romance than mystery

(first posted March 12, 2021) But that’s not the most intriguing part. It was originally published in 1925. By a man. Oh, and there’s more. It’s the first Charlie Chan novel by Earl Derr Biggers titled The House Without a Key.  As far as I know I’ve seen most of the Charlie Chan movies many times. I actually like them. Now I know that those movies are a point of contention regarding the fact that a white man was cast, not once but multiple times, as an Asian. It’s a valid point. It’s also how things were done then. However the thing that’s always struckRead More →

So have you watched the new Wednesday series on Netflix yet that’s based on the daughter from The Addams Family? If you haven’t, you may be the only one who hasn’t. Just saying. This was really good and I’m not entirely sure why. I know I liked it. My son and I stayed up until around 3 am one night during the holidays to watch all of it. It was one of those “just one more episodes and we’ll stop” situations. Only we didn’t until we were done. So, yeah, I enjoyed it. Although, why? I’m not sure exactly, so I started checking out someRead More →

I recently discovered Bergerac, an older nine season detective TV series on BritBox, that I’ve completely fallen in love with. So much so that several times a week I’ve taken to watching an episode right before I go to sleep. I’m on the third season already so it’s definitely keeping my interest. Bergerac was apparently phenomenally popular during it’s original run time in Britain but this is the first I’ve heard of it. The shocker is that it stars a younger, and extremely good-looking, John Nettles of Midsomer Murders fame. I didn’t connect the main character as being played by Nettles initially because of justRead More →

One of my favorite podcasts, All About Agatha, had the stated goal to read and rank all of the books by Agatha Christie. And the goal has been reached! With some sadness along the way because one of the co-hosts passed away suddenly late last year. I have to admit I’ve been putting off listening to the milestone discussion of Curtain, Poirot’s final book. The following fairly lengthy article shows I’m not alone in that.Read More →

I ran across an article recently and couldn’t get over how on point it was about some of– well, let’s just say some of the choices that Agatha Christie made in her writing. And I’m not talking about them being bad choices either. But rather just how brilliant she was at making those odd choices work for her. For instance… Yeah, how did the Queen of Crime Christie manage to surprise everyone. Over and over again. Heh.Read More →

Yes, zones. Plural. When I’m in the mood to read, romance novels are my favorite pick. I have authors and series that I’ve read so many times I could probably recite some of them. Since this entire site is devoted to that activity, I won’t go into any particulars here. When I’m in the mood to play, my favorite games bounce somewhere between building and adventure quest games. Which is honestly a weird place to be. Put it this way, I love the stories and puzzles of quest type games but can easily spend hours on good building games. Put the two together and I’mRead More →

It was nice taking some time off. Didn’t get a lot of reading done but did watch a few new movies. Plus I discovered a couple of new-to-me detective series. We were able to watch both Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers together as a double feature family movie night. Let me put it this way, they are both very good. But one of them is an absolutely fantastic non-stop action adventure. The other is more “what da heck did I just watch?” meta deliciousness. And yet still very good in its own weird way. I have been fighting my allergies the last few days. I’m either stopped up and can’t breath or constantly have a tissue at my nose. Yech. As a result I haven’t done a lot of anything this week, mainly because my eyes feel blurry half the time. So, while being a couch potato the other day, I was digging around on HBOMax and realized they had The Da Vinci Code. Been so long since I’d seen it, I couldn’t remember exactly what happened in it. So I watched it. Then watched the next one, Angels and Demons. It made for a nice enjoyable evening ofRead More →

Because I have so many things I want to do on the site right now but my life has been chaos lately. Seriously it’s gotten so bad that I finally had to sit down and go over the “in-progress” stuff I’m supposed to be working on for the site. Mainly because I couldn’t remember some of them and wanted to make sure I still wanted to work on them right now. Oye.  Which kind of turned into an idea for a post.
