Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles

have you ever just wanted to explore a game setting?

You know, as opposed to having to fight your way through it. Or farm. Well, then I have the game for you. Wow. This is an amazing game. Fair warning, it is addictive. I’ve never seen a game before that you can literally lose yourself in just walking around and exploring. Yeah, there are quests to complete, farms to build and develop and animals to find. But those are not the point of the game . . . unless you want them to be. Here’s a much better explanation. One other thing I will say is that because there is no combat in the game,Read More →

Yes, they finally dropped the first teaser trailer this week. And, of course, I promised my son I would post it. Oh, but it’s really good. I’ve actually gotten back to my read through of the Wheel of Time books in recent weeks. I found out my son had them on both Audible and Kindle. (Because of course he does. Heh.) The important thing, though, is that by having both they can be synced. Seriously, being able to follow along in the text as the dramatic reading plays helps me tackle these very, very, very, very long books. Immensely. As in I probably won’t finishRead More →

spoilers ahead don’t read unless you’ve seen it or want to be spoiled! I think. Honestly, I’m not sure what spoiler level this very long post actually is so I’m going with the highest just to be safe. Why am I confused? Well, right after we watched the beginning episodes, I jotted down my initial thoughts and then kind of walked away from doing the post. Just let my thoughts sit there. Some people would call that ripening an idea. I call it flat-out dithering on whether to even post about this one or not. Like I said, I ended up very long winded butRead More →

Shadow and Bone

Completely spoiler free. (I think) I managed to watch this surprising little series, Shadow and Bone, over the course of a weekend recently. Eight episodes, four hours one day and four the other. It’s really, really good. And kind of dark so it’s saying a lot that I think it’s so good. It’s also based on a series of books by author Leigh Bardugo. Not sure I want to read the books though. For one thing they’re young adult. For another, from what I’ve heard, Netflix is basically combining aspects of several different storylines to create the story of the series. So reading the booksRead More →

And the next series of books I’m going to check out after finishing the Charlie Chan series. The Saint (Simon Templar) series by Leslie Charteris They’re probably more adventure than mystery and usually that would not be my cup of tea. But I ran across the old Roger Moore series on Prime the other day. At first I thought, well, I’ll watch the first couple of episodes and see if I like them.  Now, I am absolutely hooked. Not sure if it’s the pre-James Bond Roger Moore, the rather quirky character he plays or both but I love it. Templar kind of reminds me ofRead More →

And addictive. Long story short, I got a Roku for my bedroom for my birthday in November and since then I’ve fallen in love. It’s like this gigantic search engine for just about anything that’s ever been broadcast. And, yes, it is amazing what you can find if you dig deep enough. Here are three older TV series I found that I had never even heard of before.  Colonel March of Scotland Yard (1954) This is a one season series that is so unexpectedly charming it’s almost unreal. For one thing the star is Boris Karloff. Not playing a monster. The series itself actually hasRead More →

I will freely admit that watching The Mandalorian with my son has revived (from the dead pretty much) my love of Star Wars. There was a time when the kids were little that periodically as a family we’d spend Saturday nights re-watching the entire original trilogy. Or try to at any rate. So the love has always been there. Just unconscious lately.  So, yes, because of The Mandalorian I’ve been thinking about re-watching them all. And possibly tossing in some of the animated series. But the immediate question is in what order?  Well, I found an interesting article on that one.  I may have toRead More →

reading two books at a time for once

It’s something I don’t normally do but I’m currently in the middle of two books. And it wouldn’t be happening at all if one of them wasn’t a non-fiction. Both are odd enough though that I thought I’d talk about how I got myself into this situation.  Mystery Mile by Margery Allingham One of my holiday binges was to re-watch the Campion “mystery” series on Amazon. It’s not something I watch often but I do occasionally enjoy the quirkiness of it. This time I got curious about its origin and discovered it was based on a series of mystery books by Margery Allingham, a contemporaryRead More →

Over the holidays I re-watched The Court Jester (1955) starring Danny Kaye & Basil Rathbone. It’s my favorite Danny Kaye movie and very much a spoof of other more serious swashbucklers. Like The Adventures Of Robin Hood (1938) starring Errol Flynn & Basil Rathbone that I also managed to re-watch over the holidays. Yeah, I was in that kind of mood. Anyway, it got me curious so I looked online to see if I could find any lists of the best movie sword fights. There are a lot of lists out there because apparently it’s a popular question. The one I liked the best had moreRead More →

I’m currently working on a couple of long posts. One book related and one TV series related. However, neither of them is anywhere near being ready so I thought I’d do a quick update post for one of my ongoing reading projects. With a little extra at the end. I’ve recently started listening to Wheel of Time again. Well, off and on. Okay, I’m working on psyching myself up to it, anyway. Hey, I’m on the sixth book, Lord of Chaos, and right off the bat I realized the prologue is almost 2 hours long. (The chapters probably average around 45 minutes for comparison.) My eyesRead More →

And surviving staying at home.  Well, mostly. Between recurring gallbladder symptoms and computer problems, I haven’t gotten a lot of writing done for the site. So, I’m falling back to an old standby and doing quick links. Some of them will be shared from apps on my phone so they will be very bare bones. But I am determined to get back in the groove.  Recently I got in the mood to watch the entire original Star Wars trilogy. It is so good. The word classic doesn’t even do it justice. I think timeless might be a better description. It’s simply the Star Wars.  Also my sonRead More →

originally posted on February 12, 2010 those early e-book covers are fun Next up here I have a special treat. I was digging around some old electronic files recently. And I found some things that I treasure almost as much as some of my old paperbacks. A lot of people nowadays know about a book called Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair. But do they know about or have the original story that appeared as an e-book called Command Performance? From before she made it to the big time in print? I do, plus several of her other books in their original e-book form. 😀 divingRead More →

So I had a rabbit hole experience when I ran across an article on a novella called The Madness of Frankenstein by Derrick Ferguson which was labeled as New Pulp. My brain ground to an immediate halt because, while I could kind of guess, I wanted to know exactly what New Pulp was. So, of course, I searched for an explanation and found a publisher site that just blows my mind.  a new old thing OK, first the definition of New Pulp:  What is New Pulp?  For Pro Se, the explanation is fairly simple.  New Pulp is fiction written with the same sensibilities, beats of storytelling, patterns of conflict,Read More →

Because it’s Halloween, I got in the mood to rewatch the Harry Potter movies. Then I decided to record my random observations, at least during the first movie. Read and remember. That is if you’ve read the books or seen the movies. If not– SPOILERS AHEAD! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! I’ve organized this according to the scene titles from the DVD for clarity. Also because I wanted to post this on Halloween I ran out of time and only linked to a few images so I may come back and add more later.  1. I’ve been wanting to rewatch this one for a while and when I found out Fringe was on Prime through IMDB (who knew they had their own channel?) I started an immediate binge. Seriously I watched or read very little of anything else while binging on it except for the occasional palate cleanser cozy mystery episode here and there.  I’m kind of blown away, too. I mean I remember liking it a lot when I first watched it but it seems even better than I remember. It’s only 5 seasons, or 4 1/2 since the last is only a half season, but it packs a lotRead More →
