Lately I’ve been binging the last seasons of Smallville. I didn’t actually like Smallville when it first started so I’m rarely going to re-watch all of it. I do, however, like seasons 7 through 10 for the most part and that’s usually what I binge when in the mood.
Okay, full disclosure here and possibly minor spoiler. The fact that season 6 ends with Lana Lang leaving the show except for occasional guest appearances has a lot to do with it. It’s not so much that it clears the way for more Lois Lane either. I just don’t like Smallville’s Lana in particular.
Anyway, back to the point of this post. I watched Smallville off and on most of last week. Over the weekend, though, I tend to watch documentary type shows so I thought I’d check out Hanger 1. It’s not bad. Not as good as Ancient Aliens and as always kind of repetitive like most of that genre. There was some new info I’d never heard before so points for that. Also, majorly speculative but, hey, I don’t watch those type shows for hard facts.
After finishing the two seasons of it, I started pondering again why I like the ancient alien/UFO files shows so much. Then, as I thought about restarting my other recent binge, the similarities to Smallville (and Superman at large) kind of smacked me upside the head in a blinding flash of light.
I mean I’d just spent the week before watching a series about an alien who comes to earth in a spaceship.
Also, Smallville in particular creates this entire historical mythology around the arrival of The Traveler (AKA Clark).
Let’s not forget the Luthor family’s literal obsession with research and development related to all things alien.
Or Chloe Sullivan’s Wall of Weird.
It was one of those moments when something I should already know became so glaringly obvious. Why didn’t I see it before? I have no idea. I could only laugh at myself. And I did.
