Okay, fess up now. How many times have you read a great book, realized it was probably connected to at least a couple of others and told yourself to remember to check them out . . . and then never get around to it?
Even with a book database like Readerware to help me remember these details, it happens. So, I was quite chagrined this morning to realize that I’d pulled not one but two books off the shelf to reread in the last 24 hours that fell into that “honestly good intentions” category. One, I’m currently rereading and will comment more about in a day or so is Talk Of the Town by Suzanne Macpherson.
The other is the one I want to talk about today. I really enjoyed What To Do About Annie? both the first time I read it and on this reread. It isn’t a continuous laugh out loud contemporary but it is an extremely humorous slice of modern Americana and at times very poignant due to the nature of the reunion plot used. The two main characters, an ex-priest hero and an extremely unconventional “changes her hair color more often than her clothes” heroine, are delightful to get to know. Definitely not your virginal heroine, that’s for sure.
It also doesn’t hurt that he’s already madly in love with her and quite happy to settle down from the beginning of the story because I do have a thing for that type of hero. They’re both written very smart but human and overall seem more mature in their attitudes than most romance couples, which also rings true considering their history with each other. People should learn from their mistakes and not relive them, even if they do make new ones. I have to say, though, that it’s the quirky cast of supporting characters that makes this one a book to savor rather than rush through, even the second time around. I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this crazy neighborhood.
I also checked the author’s website and there do seem to be at least three other books directly connected to this one:
- The Trouble With Mary
- The Trials of Angela
- Mad About Mia
Did I miss any? Anyone else read them?
