Earlier in the week, I watched the DVD of Batman Begins (Widescreen Edition)Batman Begins and yesterday I watched Superman Returns. I really, really like Batman Begins. It’s a great superhero/secret identity movie. Not the greatest, mind you, but definitely a good “hero finding his place” story. Superman Returns (Two-Disc Special Edition)Superman Returns, on the other hand, leaves me with extremely mixed emotions. On the one hand, it’s a pretty good movie for the franchise. Really. I can admit that. Storywise, it’s excellent. It’s just that where it ends Lois and Clark’s relationship leaves something to be desired. Actually quite a lot to be desired. Quite frankly, the romance reader in me ends up with a sour stomach each time I watch it even though it is fun on a certain level.

So, I decided I needed to cleanse my palette and went to YouTube to see if I could find something that might calm my nerves and maybe explain my, um, reservations. And I was successful. Yay.

Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete First SeasonI found an excellent fan music video for Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. So, here’s the deal. I challenge anyone to watch the following, particularly romance readers, and not come away knowing exactly why I’ll always be a devoted fan of this series. This was the ultimate superhero Relationship with the big R, underlined. Nothing else will ever come close. Of course, I could be biased, but see for yourself if there isn’t a tad bit of chemistry there. 😉

Oh, and by way of introduction, one of the things I’m going to do this year is “study” in-depth on a more or less monthly basis various plot points used in romances. First up one of my favorites – secret identities. Consider this a appetizer.

P.S. Plus let me add a special thank you to Jane for helping me figure out how to embed the YouTube video here.

  1. I kind of have a thing for secret identities, you know.

Did you ever notice that about me? Did ya? Huh?

Off to go burnish Toronado to a gleaming hue before Zorro returns from his midnight rounds. Ahh. The fantasy.

  2. Oh YAY! I LOVE secret identities in romance! I really enjoyed “Batman Begins” as well, and I think I have the same reservations and impressions of “Superman Returns” that you did. By itself, the movie was pretty good. But I tend to dislike love triangles and I dislike the idea of Lois Lane and Superman not being together, even if Mr.I-forgot-his-name-who-used-to-be-Cyclops seems be like a nice guy.

I don’t know if you follow the comics but in the recent Identity Crisis series, there were scenes of flirting bantering between Lois and Clark, that were just priceless, very much along the lines of the Lois & Clark TV show that just made me fall in love with them all over again. Have you seen them? Particularly Clark’s comments when Lois is looking for a particular intern? 🙂
