“re-enjoyable” vs “once & done”

thinking deep thoughts while healing I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately while recovering from surgery. One topic that kept coming up is how I mentally divide most stuff into “re-enjoyable” and “once and done”. It kept coming up because I kept looking at my shelves and trying to find something to re-enjoy. I say re-enjoy because I’m not just talking about reading here. There’s also watching and playing. Okay mostly watching for the last few weeks. But I have gotten some reading in too. Games not so much because, you know, moving hurts. Much better to just sit and absorb. No thinking orRead More →

Harry Potter

on the threads J.K. Rowling wove into Harry Potter

Warning! Possible spoiler ahead for that one person in the world who hasn’t ever been exposed to Harry Potter… Just saying. So, I’ve been re-watching the Harry Potter films the last few days and had a minor revelation. Admittedly J. K. Rowling isn’t the greatest writer in the world. Of course, these were supposed to be children’s books that became so much more. And as children’s stories the writing is fantastic.  However – and this is what hit me – she does an absolutely amazing job of laying out threads throughout the entire series. Threads that are not visible at first. And yet when youRead More →

When something old is new again

My schedule is beginning to get back to normal. Somewhat. Until I can build up a backlog, though, sharing some quick links will help me get back into a posting routine. That said, this was an interesting one I ran across. And rather timely, all things considered. From the article: “Today, in 2020, there are 350 working drive in theaters across the country, a number that has been in a steady decline. But they’ve seen a rise in popularity lately thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, as it’s deemed a socially distant activity. But what does the future look like for drive-ins?” I’m from and currently live inRead More →

this, that and the other kind of week

I started out the week with several posts in the works. Then life took over. As a result, I haven’t had much time to work on anything much at all. So I decided to simply do an update post on what’s in the works. More or less. Godzilla, Godzilla, Godzilla For Mother’s Day my kids got me a two volume set of Godzilla movies from the 1990s/2000s. Since then my son and I have been working our way through them in chronological order, a couple at a time. It’s both fun and mind boggling. You wouldn’t think there would be a lot of variety in themRead More →

And surviving staying at home.  Well, mostly. Between recurring gallbladder symptoms and computer problems, I haven’t gotten a lot of writing done for the site. So, I’m falling back to an old standby and doing quick links. Some of them will be shared from apps on my phone so they will be very bare bones. But I am determined to get back in the groove.  Recently I got in the mood to watch the entire original Star Wars trilogy. It is so good. The word classic doesn’t even do it justice. I think timeless might be a better description. It’s simply the Star Wars.  Also my sonRead More →

sometimes I get in the mood for “action” movies

They are normally not to my taste. But I was in the mood recently to re-watch my set of Jason Bourne movies. And I suddenly realized that I basically like three kinds of action movies. (Possibly my definition of action movies there, not someone else’s.) Now, I’ve never been big on spy movies although I have enjoyed the random James Bond. Well, okay, kind of enjoyed them. Right up until I reached the point that I wanted to beat Bond over the head with something. I’m also really not crazy about the shoot-em up, blow’em up variety although I do have the Die-Hard collection somewhereRead More →

I binged on the first season of The Orville TV series and fell in love with it. Which completely caught me off guard. I mean I thought I knew what was coming. But it wasn’t at all what I expected. To be honest, I actually thought of several different titles for this post.  never trust professional critics Particularly when it comes to science fiction. (And superheroes, too, to some extent.) Personally, I’ve never quite figured out why the “professionals” can be so far off from fan reactions. But there it is. And not just occasionally but they do it a lot. when something old isRead More →

The other night I was browsing Hulu. I found out they have 8 seasons of one of the Ancient Aliens series. I know what I’m going to be watching a lot now though. Yes, it’s a guilty pleasure. One that I’m still trying to figure out to be honest.  Do I believe everything “ancient alien” documentaries talk about? No, probably not even 10%. Eh, 5%? They are fun to watch though. Also occasionally very repetitive. Which is kind of where the guilty part comes in.  I keep asking myself why I’m wasting my time. Then do it again the next time I run across one.Read More →

Superman: Doomsday vs Death of Superman/Reign of the Supermen

I recently re-watched these two animated features back to back. I realized I like them both. Which got me to thinking. a little background Both are inspired by the DC Comics crossover trilogy of story arcs from the 1990s: “The Death of Superman” is divided into a trilogy of story arcs; the first is known as “Doomsday!”, which leads to Superman’s death at the hands of Doomsday. The second story arc, “Funeral for a Friend”, which focuses on the immediate aftermath of Superman’s death, began with The Adventures of Superman #498 (January 1993). The final story arc, “Reign of the Supermen!”,  began with a prologue in The Adventures of Superman #500 andRead More →

Over the weekend I started re-watching my DVDs of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. It’s been several years since I actually watched them and I was curious whether they would hold up. Wow. Just watching Terri Hatcher and Dean Cain interact as Lois & Clark is still a joy to behold. Those two have unbelievable chemistry. Yes, I said have because I saw a Comic-con interview of them from 2018 or 2019 and it’s still there. 25 years later. Oh, there are other TV series that I loved before and after but Lois & Clark is special to me for a lotRead More →

Apparently, it’s going to have a cinema release in Australia but will also be on Acorn TV eventually. The dates seem weird but this is also from Wikipedia so take it with a grain of salt: Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears will have its World Premiere at the Palm Springs International Film Festival January 4, 2020. The film will then be released in Australia by Roadshow Films February 27, 2020 and will screen in the US in select theaters and on streaming service Acorn TV in March 2020. Over the holidays, my son and I managed to binge on not one, not two, but three first seasons of original streaming TV series. I may never get my sleep schedule back in shape but at least he’s gone back to work and won’t be dragging me into late night binges anytime soon. I hope.  Anyway, the three series we binged were all good. Either that or I’m sleep deprived and lacking in judgement. Which is why I’m keeping this short and may write more on each individual series after I catch up on sleep. The Witcher (Netflix) This one was at my son’s insistenceRead More →

I haven’t done any Wheel of Time related posts lately, mainly because I haven’t been reading/listening to the books. Hopefully I’ll be able to get back to them over the holidays. But since they’ve made several casting announcements recently I thought I’d mention the one yet to be announced casting choice that seems to concern fans the most. That would be for Bela, the horse that leaves Two Rivers with our protagonists at the beginning of the series and somehow manages to pop up periodically over the rest of the books. I’m not kidding, this is a very serious topic with die-hard fans. It’s bizarreRead More →

So, right after Halloween, my son sent the following video to me because he found it fascinating how most of the media “hulking out” (his words) incarnations aren’t that close to the book story: After watching the video, I told him that I’d always thought the 1941 movie with Spencer Tracy, of all people, in the title role has always creeped me out the most because the transformation Dr. Jekyll goes through was way more psychological than other versions I’ve seen. I’m not even certain they did all that much in terms of makeup changes when he transformed. It seems to be mostly acting. IRead More →
