I was digging around on Amazon a month or so ago and ran across this British series which is described as a serious cold case detective series with a lot of comedy. At first I was not really sold on the idea. Then I looked at some reviews and people were raving about it. Well, at least for the first nine seasons. After that the cast changes completely and it apparently looses some of its humor. Which is probably to be expected in a series so heavily dependent on the personalities of the stars. Fans are simply not always receptive to their favorite actors leavingRead More →

Because I’ve waited long enough to talk about it since we saw it the day it went online. And if you haven’t seen it, then– Stop right now and go watch it before reading further. Just saying. I warned you! So I’m waiting. Still waiting. Seen it yet? Okay, we good? Anyway, if you haven’t watched any of this amazing little series then shame on you. Because it’s worth it. And that’s not something I thought I’d ever say when people online started raving about, well, a baby Yoda. Okay, now that the warning part is out of the way, I will admit that IRead More →

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) – I just can’t even go there

And, yeah, I did watch it but I ain’t talking about it. So I found a review that says pretty much what I’m thinking and more:  To be fair I have actually read some good comments online about it. For the most part, I think it’s just so different from the first Wonder Woman movie that it suffers – a lot – by comparison. Like, really a lot.Read More →

I wasn’t even sure I was going to do a post this week. Or over the holidays. Because to be honest, I’m in a big reading mood. Okay a flat out binge of just about all my Shelly Laurenston books. Some other authors too.  And every time I think about writing a post on any of them… well, I go back to reading instead. So I think I may simply work on background stuff for the next week or two. Anyway, don’t expect any in-depth posts until after the New Year. Maybe links. Maybe nothing. Whatever.  However, and speaking of links, I found out somethingRead More →

I haven’t had a lot of time to work on posts this week because… holiday season. But I ran across an excellent post regarding one of my favorite SG1 episodes and thought I’d share. Okay, let’s face it, Window of Opportunity is probably everyone’s favorite. Or at least every fan’s favorite. It’s just perfection. And reading (and watching) the background behind how this one came about is absolutely fascinating. First the post for you to go read: If you’re interested, make sure to watch the embedded video for even more details. I’m not all that crazy about sit-coms. Never have been. I mean, when we still had traditional TV access, I would occasionally watch one enough to know the characters. But usually those were the fad-of-the-moment that everyone else was watching too. At least a little. You know the ones you can’t get away from because everyone is talking about them. Think Friends or Happy Days or, oh, yeah, MASH is another good one. But it’s rare that I actually became enough a fan of the average run of the mill sit-com to watch start to finish, every single episode, rain or shine, good or bad. Read More →

the eye-catching name I recently ran across a movie on Netflix called Enola Holmes, which was an eye-catching name I admit. Then I noticed it was based on books so I did some research. It’s loosely based on the first book in a series of young adult novels by Nancy Springer. They are about a very much younger sister of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. The more I read about them the more I really was intrigued. Not enough to watch the movie… yet… but the interest was definitely there.  I finally got curious enough to get the first book, The Case of the Missing Marquess.Read More →

Finally had time to watch the new Scooby Doo movie called SCOOB! last weekend. I enjoyed it and laughed a lot. It was a nice update of the characters and setting while honoring the past. At times, it almost felt like a Hanna Barbara smorgasbord to be honest. It was actually kind of amazing how many HB characters they managed to fit into the movie, either as full roles, cameos or just Easter egg “blink & you miss them” mentions. And yet that aspect never felt forced to me. It was just fun and a little nostalgic. But not in an intrusive way at all. Okay,Read More →

As I mentioned in a recent post, I recently finished a pretty much yearly rewatch of Stargate SG1. Even the follow-up movie Arc of Truth. The only thing I haven’t rewatched yet is the Continuum movie. Not totally sure I’m going to, either, because, not my favorite.  Anyway, all this Stargate binging got me to thinking that I needed to work on a favorites page for one of my all-time favorite TV series. So that’s been my focus for this week and Stargate (TV series) is now a page. While doing some research for that, though, I ran across a few videos I wanted toRead More →

Stargate SG1

why I love Stargate a lot more than Star Trek nowadays

I’ve been thinking about this for awhile, off and on. Most recently while re-watching some Stargate SG1 episodes. For the umpteenth time.  And it’s not that I don’t still love Star Trek! Because I’m a longtime fan of almost all variations of Star Trek. My favorite is probably Star Trek: The Next Generation. For a lot of reasons. Just saying that up front before the next paragraph.  However while I “grew up” with Star Trek and love it, I think I may have outgrown it. Why? The short answer? The Star Trek universe can get a bit… well, I don’t want to say repetitive but that’sRead More →

Lately I’ve been binging the last seasons of Smallville. I didn’t actually like Smallville when it first started so I’m rarely going to re-watch all of it. I do, however, like seasons 7 through 10 for the most part and that’s usually what I binge when in the mood.  Okay, full disclosure here and possibly minor spoiler. The fact that season 6 ends with Lana Lang leaving the show except for occasional guest appearances has a lot to do with it. It’s not so much that it clears the way for more Lois Lane either. I just don’t like Smallville’s Lana in particular.  Anyway, backRead More →

I’m currently working on a couple of long posts. One book related and one TV series related. However, neither of them is anywhere near being ready so I thought I’d do a quick update post for one of my ongoing reading projects. With a little extra at the end. I’ve recently started listening to Wheel of Time again. Well, off and on. Okay, I’m working on psyching myself up to it, anyway. Hey, I’m on the sixth book, Lord of Chaos, and right off the bat I realized the prologue is almost 2 hours long. (The chapters probably average around 45 minutes for comparison.) My eyesRead More →

I can’t believe I’ve never mentioned Megamind here. I actually had to do a site search to convince myself I hadn’t.  Anyway, I re-watched it recently and, boy, is it a gem of an animated movie about superheroes. I even got into a debate with my son about whether it’s a flat-out spoof of the superhero genre. I don’t know, but after thinking about it some more, I think it’s more in the line of a superhero fractured fairy tale. Showing my age there, I know, but there it is. I say fractured fairy tale because in this story the villain becomes the hero whoRead More →

I got in the mood to re-watch some of the original CSI : Crime Scene Investigation (hereafter called CSI “Vegas”) recently. The urge to rewatch this one doesn’t happen often. I mean, I watched the entire series when it was airing. All the way to the end. For the most part I really enjoyed it even with all the character changes. Now, however, I only re-watch selected episodes. And not necessarily the ones anyone else might pick to re-watch either. Outside of episodes that have intriguing detective work or science, I tend towards favoring two distinct types. First are the ones I call Chaos episodes,Read More →
