Seriously, I want to know.  Because I was reading yet another romance-  You know actually this one might not have been a romance. It might very well have been one of a cozy mystery series I’ve been checking out but since I didn’t write the title of the book down when this irritation stuck yet again I don’t know. It could’ve been a romance because it’s something I’ve noticed in them a lot over the years. Like really a lot. The exact pet peeve I’m ranting about?  “tiny” 5’5″ heroines and “large” 6’4″ heroes Now here’s my issue with that description. I’m 5’5″. My sonRead More →

The Cover Of A Book

When I was a very little girl, seriously elementary school age, I memorized a poem for class. This is the one I chose. This is also all I remember of it but it left an indelible impression on me. I wish I knew the author so that I can find the rest of it. The cover of a book is like a door That takes me to a place that I’ve not been to before A pirate or a fairy queen may wait inside for me I never know until I turn the page what wonders I shall seeRead More →

I had already decided I wasn’t going to comment on the topic of the Superman/Wonder Woman hook-up, because frankly I’m not all that invested in the outcome one way or another. This rather odd storyline will in no way impact the way I feel about Superman or Lois Lane no matter how long or short lived it is. As far as I’m concerned. I still have the “products” I already love to rewatch and reread and what they’re doing just doesn’t involve the characters I love but some other people I don’t know. Is that short-sighted? Maybe. But, you know, fans and consumers have thatRead More →

Sorting out a bunch of Arcane things ;-)

My class is over and I’ve recovered from a case of bacterial bronchitis that hit me completely out of the blue around the first of May, so I went out last week and picked up a bunch of books from Jayne Ann Krentz‘s Arcane collection that I’d missed out on from our local used bookstore. You know, I haven’t “glommed” a favorite author like that in years. Plus I picked up a couple of odds and ends not connected to that collections, too. It was fun. At least I thought it was until I started trying to sort out what I’d picked up from whatRead More →

A funny thing happens when one takes a break from reading for a period of time. A favorite author’s backlist can multiply like rabbits, especially when we’re talking about the romance genre. At least nowadays. Case in point, a couple of weeks ago, I go out to eat with my children and on the way home we stop do some shopping. Oddly enough, or not, we all three end up in the book aisle at about the same time and start jokingly picking out books for each other. Then things took a turn into the very funny when I pick up a new book byRead More →

Yeah, ain’t that the truth. 😉 I’ve been quiet lately, real life and all, which I really need to tell you all about, but yesterday something rather humorous happened that I wanted to share. Cathy from TN contacted me wanting some help finding a book. She was hoping I knew of it. Well, I did.At least I thought I did. I just needed my memory tweaked a bit. Okay, more than just a bit, but nobody is perfect. o.O First here’s her initial question: I found your website when I was researching Emilie Loring book titles. I am hoping that you can help me rememberRead More →

There are two threads going on over at DearAuthor.com that fascinate me. One is False Advertising? and the other is The Changing Face of Romance . . .Or not?. They fascinate me because the arguments used by some of the posters sound reasonable and logical. So much so in fact that they make me want to revise my own opinions. Almost. Are they truly that reasonable, however? Don’t know. Still thinking about them. Whatever, I just posted the following to the False Advertising thread and wanted to expand on it a little here: I’e thought about this entire discussion over night and I’m curious about something fundamental here. A romanceRead More →

I still haven’t had a chance to sit down and write out comments on either of the books I just read but as I was putting up the books I bought last week, I realized that I’d mentioned the Fobes one but not the other. This one was strictly an impulse buy because I’d never heard of the author before, even if this Signature Select by Fayrene Preston is labeled “Two classic stories from a favorite author”. What I couldn’t resist was the cover and for that matter the title. Of course, both of my children immediately wanted to know why a book called SwanSeaRead More →

While doing some research for a blog entry I’m working on about connected groups, I found out something I didn’t know, i.e. that Linda Fallon of the Shades trilogy, which I absolutely loved, was Linda Winstead Jones and a whole host of other Lindas apparently. This is truly weird timing, too, because I just got through reading The Moon Witch by her under the Winstead Jones AKA, the second in an apparent trilogy about three sisters, and had really mixed feelings about. It’s always so disconcerting to find something like this out. Not because it’s not a good thing for authors to do but moreRead More →

Last week I bought the Hero, Come Back anthology and devoured it almost in one gulp. All three stories – one each by Stephanie Laurens, Christina Dodd & someone new to me Elizabeth Doyle – were really good. The Doyle story was especially a pleasant surprise and I may talk about it in another blog one day. Today, though, I want to comment specifically on my reactions to the Lauren’s short story – Lost and Found, the story of how Reggie Carmarthen who appeared in On A Wild Night links up with Anne Ashford from On A Wicked Dawn – because it made me realizeRead More →

Not long ago, Wendy in her RTB blog said: Sure, the concept that everyone has a “soul mate” is terribly romantic, but it has a tendency to perpetuate what I call “lazy romance.” Instead of showing two people learning to love and understand each other, the author so often just whips out the concept of soul mates and voila! Instant romance! Who needs characters learning to understand and respect each other when Fate destined them to be together for all time? Why take the time to get to know each other and fall in love when it’s already written in the stars? Yeah, I canRead More →

There have been several extremely good blogs posted in the last few days related to the lack of respect romance gets and what we should or shouldn’t do about it. This is another of those topics I’ve learned to stay away from, not because I don’t believe romance novels get a bum rap overall. I do. It’s just that after reading an almost infinite number of these discussions over the years I tend to shake my head more over how we all tend to get outraged for the wrong reasons at times than feel compelled to comment. So what I normally do instead of postingRead More →

I was intensely craving a medieval romance over the weekend and realized with some dismay that there wasn’t one in my TBR basket currently. That will definitely have to be corrected but, in the meantime, I gave my bookshelves and good long scrutiny and came up with this favorite reread of mine by Donna Fletcher. I tend to pick books more for plot than anything else and this one combines two favorites of mine – the oft-used romance device of the arranged marriage with just a hint of a mating challenge, although to be honest I’m not sure who is the seducer here. Then again,Read More →
