I love looking at old Superman covers

Especially the ones from around the 1960s. Because ya just never know what you’ll find. Don’t get me wrong, there are truly great and also truly bad covers from all eras. He and his support cast have been around for going on 80 years now. But there’s just something about the truly wacky covers from the late 1950s through the early 1970s that seem to outdo all the others, especially when it comes to his relationship with Lois. For example: I mean, seriously, that’s just so cute and so whacky at the same time.Read More →

The greatest lover of the silent screen was, of course, inspired by a romance novel

Because what else would it be inspired by? Don’t believe me? So, I was browsing around on Pinterest and ran across this: I’ve heard about this one being one of the earliest genre romances of the 20th century. Which meant it was old enough it probably had a plain hardback cover originally but I was curious as to what the original paperback one might have been. Okay, that’s more like it but I sill don’t know if that’s the first. Another thing I’ve heard about this book is that it was the inspiration, or at least one of them, for the early silent movie sheikRead More →

Yes, I do love the original, SG1, very much. Multiple rewatchings to the point of starting to rate individual episodes. In a pinch, I can watch Atlantis but it’s not my favorite. Universe does not exist for me. Just saying. So I was very interest when I ran across this video about the history of this beloved science fiction franchise: This the first of three parts and I enjoyed all of them. I think you can also check on the channel they’re on for a video that compiles them into one but that’s like an hour long so fair warning.Read More →

I had just finished devouring the first season of the new Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries when I ran across a review of it. So, let’s start with a quote from that first: Overall, Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries was a happy surprise since I loved it just as much as Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. I only wish there were more than four episodes in this first season. While the first episode is a bit of a slow start, it met then exceeded my expectations. Fans of Phryne Fisher should be pleased to see her legacy continue with the charming Peregrine Fisher. ‘MS. FISHER’S MODERN MURDER MYSTERIES’ REVIEWRead More →

I grew up watching her movies and TV series because my mother was a huge fan so I’ve been trying to put together a post on her for the last week or so. Then I ran across an article that pretty much says everything I’d say so here it is: Very, very few classic film stars still remain with us. With the passing of Doris Day in May, that number sadly becomes even more minuscule. So, today we remember wonderful Doris Day movies in tribute. 12 MOVIES WITH DORIS DAY, QUEEN OF ROMANTIC COMEDIES My personal favorite is probably a close tie between Glass BottomRead More →

British superheroes… um, what?

Cause I’m sure there are some British superheroes in the comics but I’m drawing a blank. Name any of today’s superheroes and you can bet they’ll be American. Iron Man, Wonder Woman, Spiderman: the list goes on and on. It’s easy to think we don’t have a single one to call our own this side of the Atlantic. But maybe we do. Homegrown superheroes: which UK characters and legends should team up? Oh, OK… that makes more sense. This was actually a fascinating article to me for a number of reasons. Let’s see, we have Robin Hood, King Arthur, Beowulf, Prospero, Cuchulain & Sherlock Holmes mentioned.Read More →

I’m not that much on horror. Like at all. Honestly, I do not seek horror out but it occasionally finds me, usually when I stumble into a movie has some horror elements. I might even make it to the end of the movie. But I ain’t gonna read horror. Just, no. Recently, though, I decided to start rewatching X-Files. The original. From the beginning. In small bits of a couple of episodes at a time. Don’t know how far I will make it but we’ll see. Thing is, I had forgotten just how much horror there was in that series. When I see images like the following, I realize just how weird it was that the “comic book powers that be” thought it was OK to pair Superman with Wonder Woman for more than some kind of alternate reality. And how far he (Superman) has come. Thankfully. Will there probably be missteps in the future? Sure. But this, this is perfection.Read More →

Really hilarious.  Okay, full disclosure. I watched the first season or so of the Merlin TV series when it first aired. And then it just got too ridiculous for me. Or ridiculous and overly dramatic. Oh, I don’t know how to put it. It was kind of like watching some bizarre fractured fairy tale and while most of the time that works for me, hence the attempt at liking it, this one just didn’t work. I did, however, watch the series finale after it went off the air and I may eventually watch it all the way through. So I’m not giving up. Having saidRead More →

Okay, just for the record this post will probably contain some slight spoilers but, seriously, anyone who doesn’t have some idea of the major beats of this story has been living in a cave for the last three decades.  Anyway, my children got me these two videos for Mother’s Day. Boy, do they know their mother.  My son and I ended up watching it together on Mother’s Day and the only thing that really threw us was starting out with basically the New 52 Superman in The Death of Superman… who was hooked on and apparently dating Lois Lane. The family aspect of DC’s Superman is more prominent than ever thanks to “Rebirth” and the success of Super Sons, and it was almost going to be the premise of a Warner Bros. animated series. Long-time animation artist/director Vinton Heuck has shared artwork from Superman Family, an animated series he was pitching to Warner Bros. Animation. Heuck, who recently worked on Young Justice and is now working on DC Universe’s Harley Quinn, wanted to bring the Kent family to cartoons with a heaping helping of “crazy Silver Age stories” inspired by comic books of the past. Inside the SUPERMAN FAMILY Animated Series That Almost Was On the oneRead More →
