I’ve actually been in a reading mood this last week and zipped through the entire Dana Marie Bell Maggie’s Grove 5 book series. I’m still working on a post related to that little binge. So I thought I’d share this one link I ran across. Don’t ask what I was looking for. I’m not sure I know. But this is what I found.  The Definitive Ranking Of Robin’s 359 Exclamations From ‘Batman’ You know it’s kind of amazing that there are 359 of these “Robin exclamations” when there were only 120 episodes of Batman (1966). Seriously, I knew there would be a lot of themRead More →

Sort of. Or maybe it’s definitely an idea ahead of its time. Maybe technology is finally catching up with the concept. Again, sort of. I found this article several weeks ago but didn’t feel like doing anything with it. To be honest I wasn’t even sure I was going to use it on the site. Then I actually reading the whole thing. I was amazed. Seriously amazed. Piggly Wiggly was the first… what? Of course, I first got stuck on the part about Piggly Wiggly being the first self-serving store. And had to look that up. I think my brain short-circuited Within a generation, first,Read More →

I’m not a writer and I have no ambition to be one. There was a time I played around with writing fan fiction. That urge kind of passed. At least for now. Occasionally I do play around with characters I’ve created and their stories and their worlds. I see it more as creative exercise for my mind than anything else. Besides it’s just fun. Recently I was doing some research for an idea I had related to using auroras in a story. I don’t live where they appear and basically know very little about them. So lots of research involved. But I love browsing stuff about weatherRead More →

I follow several blogs related to pulp fiction and vintage paperbacks. The other day I almost dropped my phone when I saw one item pop up in my feeds. It was the publisher info for the book behind the cover I use as the icon for my Ten Nights of Love post series. Finally. Apparently bad covers are a problem that is as old as paperback publishing. I ran across an article that, um, beautifully illustrates that point. And it’s about the first US paperback covers for J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit of all things. Barbara Remington’s first cover is truly an exercise in interpreting the idea of The Hobbit, rather than its content, since she was not given a chance to read the book when she received the commission. The Bizarre Book Covers for the First U.S. Paperback Editions of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Books, Made By an Artist Who Had Never Read Them The cover in question: Um, o-kay. Well,Read More →

I’ve been meaning to comment on this find for a long time and it keeps slipping through the cracks. Several years ago I ran across an article or link or something that led me to a site called the Fortress of Solitude Super Network. Bet ya can’t guess what it is all about about.  Anyway, one specific feature there blew… my… mind. I mean seriously blew me away. Apparently there is a lost comic from very early in the careers of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators of Superman. The Powers That Be would not let them publish it. Wonder why?   Well, theyRead More →

Not from me although my son has been nagging me lately to start reading, er, listening to the series again. And I’m trying to get back to it. I am. Life has been interfering in a major way and epic fantasy is not my go to comfort zone. Seriously. No, this is about two things he sent me related to WOT as a form of said nagging. But they’re fun so I thought I’d share. First here’s a really good video about what the Wheel of Time is. It contains some info I’ve never heard before and I have my own fan database in theRead More →

Even when they are attempting to be dead serious. I ran across a vintage cover of an Agatha Christie book I just had to share because, besides being an old one ($.25?) I hadn’t seen, she’s being strangled by… the Hulk??? Which stopped me dead in my tracks. I mean her skin tone is pretty normal even if she does have a slightly green tint so this isn’t an aging thing going on. The hands strangling her are very green though.Read More →

I haven’t done a Doctor Who related post lately so when I ran across an article that made me want to argue with it, I knew the time had come. There have been many different Doctors on Doctor Who, and with them many companions. Here are ten times the companions were stronger than the Doctor. Ask any Whovian who the best companion is and they will have a well thought out list of reasons why their favorite is the right choice. However, ask about the strongest and the debate changes a bit. I haven’t done any Wheel of Time related posts lately, mainly because I haven’t been reading/listening to the books. Hopefully I’ll be able to get back to them over the holidays. But since they’ve made several casting announcements recently I thought I’d mention the one yet to be announced casting choice that seems to concern fans the most. That would be for Bela, the horse that leaves Two Rivers with our protagonists at the beginning of the series and somehow manages to pop up periodically over the rest of the books. I’m not kidding, this is a very serious topic with die-hard fans. It’s bizarreRead More →

So I had a rabbit hole experience when I ran across an article on a novella called The Madness of Frankenstein by Derrick Ferguson which was labeled as New Pulp. My brain ground to an immediate halt because, while I could kind of guess, I wanted to know exactly what New Pulp was. So, of course, I searched for an explanation and found a publisher site that just blows my mind.  a new old thing OK, first the definition of New Pulp:  What is New Pulp?  For Pro Se, the explanation is fairly simple.  New Pulp is fiction written with the same sensibilities, beats of storytelling, patterns of conflict,Read More →

I’ve decided to focus this month on working on some “behind the scenes” projects and general maintenance so what posts I do manage to write will probably be fairly short. Mainly, there’s one project I’ve been thinking about for a while which is creating pages for My Favorite Things so the last week or so I’ve been playing around with how I want to format those. Another project I’m working on is expanding the About page.  In the meantime, I ran across an article about combining genres and thought I’d share because I thought the opening paragraph was very intriguing:  From a writer’s perspective, theRead More →

During a particularly busy and stressful week with nothing else ready to post I noticed the National Weather Service (NWS) doing a lot of posts related to the fact that the NWS is observing an anniversary on October 1. So I thought a quick link post about the NWS would be fun today since I’m a weather spotter in real life and love all things related to weather anyway. Please note that a weather spotter is not a storm chaser. Weather spotting is simply about knowing what to look for wherever or whenever and reporting it as needed. I ran across “Doctor Who: The Time War Was Genius (& Moffat Made It Even Better)” on Screen Rants and was left rather bemused. Maybe because Screen Rants is rather hit and miss with me. But I agree with this one even though I hadn’t thought about it that way before. Put it this way, I’m a big fan of the new Doctor Who but have tried to watch the classic version and just… can’t. Maybe if I skipped to later seasons it would work for me but starting at the very beginning does not. Nope. No way.  I’d never really thought about how the TimeRead More →
