Pitbull Krypto
I LOVE Krypto as a pitbull.. or a Great Dane? Seriously, eat your heart out Bathound Ace. Hehehe. The Chronological Superman 1967:Intercrime was a criminal organization introduced – and forgotten about, for the most part – in 1967. Despite the name, it didn’t appear to share any similarities with the Fourth World Saga’s “Intergang.” But that’s all beside the point. I’ve included this panel because I’d forgotten how terrifying Wayne Boring’s depiction of Krypto was.Read More →

Romance…. Comics?
Romance comics are full of pain and anguish, but always end with the girl getting her guy. The mid-century stories always seem to follow the exact same path: (1) we are introduced to a painfully insecure girl (2) who falls in love with the man-of-her-drams, (3) but the promise of a relationship quickly turns to existential despair, (4) which is followed by a “surprise” happy ending where the lovebirds are reunited and plan to get married. Let’s take a walk through some vintage romance comics and see this play out, step-by-step. Insecurity-Love-Anguish-Matrimony: The 4 Stages of Every Mid-Century Romance Comic I knew they existed. This is nice
And just because I need a break from the weather :-): The Harlequin lovebirds are going to be parents. Quest — one half of a pair of rare peregrine falcons, who fell in love on a ledge across from the headquarters of the largest producer of romance novels in the world — laid her first egg Tuesday afternoon. Burnt orange and speckled, it was spotted by the executive assistant to Harlequin’s CEO. Employees at their offices in North York set up telescopes to watch over the birds last week. “Delight and hysteria!” said CEO Donna Hayes of the mood. The avid bird watcher was theRead More →
Romance = . . . what??
There are two threads going on over at DearAuthor.com that fascinate me. One is False Advertising? and the other is The Changing Face of Romance . . .Or not?. They fascinate me because the arguments used by some of the posters sound reasonable and logical. So much so in fact that they make me want to revise my own opinions. Almost. Are they truly that reasonable, however? Don’t know. Still thinking about them. Whatever, I just posted the following to the False Advertising thread and wanted to expand on it a little here: I’e thought about this entire discussion over night and I’m curious about something fundamental here. A romanceRead More →
Whose story is it anyway?
Am I the only romance reader who doesn’t believe that romance should be “for women by women” solely? Every time I run across that “mantra” lately, it’s starting to stick in my craw. If I had a craw, that is. (G) And that specific phrase doesn’t even have to be “said” for me to start twitching. Take the ever-present discussion of chick lit that’s always popping up somewhere or another nowadays. That one always starts me dwelling on how chick lit is so strongly focused on “her story”. That’s all well and good and actually nothing all that new to romances – not that chickRead More →
Hits & misses in the same book
Ever read an extremely satisfactory romance and come away wondering why you didn’t like it more? This has happened with me with two books in the last week or so. I really enjoyed both. Honest. And yet . . . I can’t say I was wildly crazy about either one of them. I also haven’t been able to figure out why. True one was by a first time author, Sally MacKensie, but the other was by someone I’ve liked quite a bit in the past, Jillian Hunter. In fact one of Hunter’s books, Fairy Tale, would probably place on a list of my top tenRead More →
My weekly database update
As I type this I’m adding to my book database, Readerware, the handful of books I’ve managed to snag this last week. They are: Cassidy, Carla: The Perfect Family – I don’t know why I got this romantic suspense exactly, except that I’ve enjoyed several of her category books in the past, plus a couple of her more humorously inclined single titles. So, sometimes I simply take a chance on an author’s new direction. At least once or twice anyway. Knight, Angela: Master of the Moon – You know, I’m not sure I’ve ever read this author. I’ll have to double-check after I do theRead More →
