A Dog's Life

For the last couple of days, I’ve been distracted dealing with a family matter that in the grand scheme of things seems small but isn’t to us. My son’s dog is 16 years old and showing it now. He’d gotten to the point that he couldn’t get up and down and was having a lot trouble even navigating just the two steps we have on our front porch. Things had gotten bad for him in just the last few months and we were starting to worry about having to make a big decision soon. So, we took him to the vet this week and turns outRead More →

Okay, I’ll admit that I haven’t been following the latest kerflunkel in romanceland closely but I have seen a couple of posts related to it around. Most notably for me over on The Galaxy Express and The Misadventures of Super Librarian. I didn’t comment on either because, frankly, publishing issues are not of particular concern for me as a reader. I did run across an article online this morning that I thought was interesting on the topic (and yes I know they’ve changed the name of the “project” already):  And as always with clichéd, formulaic novels, it’s harder than it seems to pull them off with anyRead More →

Tomorrow on TCM (Turner Classic Movies) there’s supposed to be a marathon of eleven Falcon movies on November 20 starting at 6 AM (Eastern, I think). God, I love watching those things, almost as much as The Thin Man movies. And if you ask my kids, you’d know I can’t get enough of those.  If you like the genre and even if you can’t watch all of them, try to watch/record the first one The Gay Falcon – it’s hilarious. The first time I finally caught it, I kept surprising myself by LOL, literally, at their antics.Read More →

I am a fan of romances. I am rarely a fan of individual authors. On occasion, though, I do fixate on a few that I follow, um, religiously, shall we say, at least in terms of knowing when their new books in certain series or themes are coming out. My fan spidey sense says one of my current favored ones, Bianca D’Arc, has a new one coming out today in her Dragon Knights group called Dragon Storm. Make of that information what you will. 😉Read More →

Recently while looking for something to read that had dragons in it, I was digging through my ebook shelves and realized that I’d collected quite a few favorite dragon shifter stories. How that came to be, I’m not quite sure since dogs and cats are what usually pass for the norm in shifters. 😉 Anyway, I thought I’d share my list of top author & series that I tend to reread the most. And, yeah, quite a few of them are labeled erotic romances, but not all. D’Arc, Bianca – Dragon Knights Maiden Flight (erotic romance) Border Lair (erotic romance) Ice Dragon (romance) Prince ofRead More →

My father would've loved to blog

Of course, he’d have had to learn to type first but that would’ve been a minor inconvenience. 😀 OTOH, one of my fondest memories of my father was of him busily clipping articles out of the newspaper or magazines on all kinds of topics and pasting or taping them into a steno-pad that he kept ever handy. He would always jot down when and where he got the clippings around the edges of the pages, which would’ve been great if anyone else could’ve read his writing. So, we’ll just give him an “A” for effort on that one and move along with the story. At any point,Read More →

It always amazes me when authors who say they’re reader’s, too act like they’ve never had to buy or look up a book online, particularly an e-book, or even had to research information about their own or other author’s books or websites. Because if they had, they’d know not to hide information about their books on their websites where readers can’t find it and instead make it super easy to find. Yeah, I’ve been looking up books on author’s websites again. And, no, I’m not saying who or what. Sigh.Read More →

Oh get your minds out of the gutter. 😀 Yeah, so anyway, I had an interesting if short chat with my son yesterday just as I was getting ready to watch a TiVo recording of The Legend of the Red Dragon, a 1994 Jet Li martial arts movie. Mark quipped that he didn’t think I liked martial arts/kung fu movies. My response was to wonder why he would think that when he knew good and well one of my top favorite movies is The Forbidden Kingdom, an extremely fun story about the legend of the Monkey King featuring both Jackie Chan and Jet Li in mentoringRead More →

I know we readers are a strange lot but authors let characters romp around in their heads on a regular basis and then many of them admit – out loud – that those same characters get out of hand and take over. o.O It’s a good thing I crave the stories they write or I’d have serious reservations about being around some of them if you know what I mean. 😀Read More →

A recent discussion over on The Galaxay Express about how to promote science fiction romances to new-to-them readers has renewed my passion as an advocate for people using tags to help describe books to readers and also reminded me of a little experiment I did back in the spring on a book from my top favorites list. In fact, I chose Zandia by Tilly Greene specifically because it’s probably the most risque one on my top favorites list at present. I originally posted this in a thread on the AAR forum but since I’ve just now ran a check to see if the links and comments still hold, here it is again, with anyRead More →

For years I’ve looked for just the right reading chair. Somehow, I don’t think this is quite it. The idea is… interesting but as the article asks, “What if you didn’t want to rock and read?” Of course, the idea is to apparently store the energy from the rocking for later use but still.  Needs more work, I think. Don’t you? OTOH, we readers will read in some of the strangest places and positions as the discussion over on Access Romance – Reader’s Gab thread of Location, Location, Location clearly shows.Read More →

The last few weeks of my life are perfect examples of why I hesitated so long about getting back into blogging. My preference is to plan ahead and backlog posts rather to do them on the fly but life doesn’t always cooperate. Lately, it’s hasn’t cooperated at all. Do you know how frustrating it is to collect a bunch of stuff or have some great ideas for posts and no time to work on them? Or be completely frazzled when you do have time? Yeah, I bet some of you writer types know exactly what I’m talking about, don’t you? The reader types are probablyRead More →

My mother was in the hospital recently and while I was out there visiting, I had a chance once again to go to the little-hole-in-the-wall used bookstore called The Book Shop in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, where my sister and mother live. It always amazes me the difference between that bookstore and the one we have here. The one here started out small like that one but it isn’t any longer and I have to admit that I miss that feeling. If you don’t know what I mean by hole-in-the-wall, let me explain. The one out there is in a small building with small rooms and books crammed on shelvesRead More →

Just to let you know, you’ll probably be seeing a flood of posts over the next several days as I get caught up with all the things on my mind, all the books I’ve bought in the last few days as well as attempt to get back into some type of schedule here. I’ve been more or less off-line for the last week or so due to my mother (who’s 84) being in the hospital out in Missouri (I’m in Kentucky). At first I wasn’t sure how serious it was and thought I was going to have to drop everything and immediately run out there. Then thingsRead More →
