And occasionally it’s all there

I’ve been winding down from a difficult week for the last two nights by rewatching The Mummy trilogy, which isn’t actually a trilogy but more a double feature of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns with an added spin-off of The Scorpion King. If you haven’t seen them, romance fans, treat yourself someday because it is all there – adventure, mystery, fantasy and real romance. Okay, mystery may be a stretch so call it suspense if you want but it’s all in one very nice package in all three movies minus the blood and gore traditionally associated with horror or action/adventure films. The Mummy isRead More →

For the most part, I read one book at a time with one major qualification. I have two of those padded book covers and use the oldest for rereads and the newer one for first time reads. This system makes it easy to spot at a glance which is which but the downside is that I tend to get twitchy if there isn’t something in each of them. So, even though I tend to finish “reading” one book before starting another, I also tend to cheat on that by visiting with old friends. Otherwise, known as rereading or skimming the good parts. Okay, I’m going to rant today on a topic as opposed to commenting on specific books, so pay attention because it will probably be a fairly rare occurence. Over the last week, I know I’ve run across not one but several gripes about romances having too many virginal heroines. (Granted, I may have overdosed on blogs because I have no idea which mentioned this and for that I’m sorry. If anyone did recently mention this topic in a blog entry, speak up and I’ll edit some links in here.) Now, I’m not crazy enough to argue differently and claim there isn’t a definite overabundance ofRead More →

It took me all weekend and part of Monday but I finally finished it. Not all of that was the book’s fault. Actually most of it wasn’t because of getting involved in family activities and a major migraine that struck Saturday. Part of my distraction was due to the book itself, though. For some strange reason I wanted to stop and go rewatch The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weiss at several spots . . . and I’m still having the occasional twinge in that direction so I just might have to scratch that itch in the near future. Maybe Rupert reminded me ofRead More →

The Nanny

Having recently rediscovered this TV series, I’m absolutely amazed at how much I really do love it. I remember watching it while it was in first run on CBS and how much I enjoyed it then, but what gets me is how much it still makes me laugh. And giggle. And guffaw. Fluff? Sure. But good fluff, if you know what I mean. Comfortable with a sense of fun that doesn’t hurt anyone in the process. Will it become a true classic that stands the test of time? I honestly don’t know. I do know that so many of the series that were lauded asRead More →

I’ve had this book for about a month now, can’t seem to get it read and I have no idea why really. Yes, her earlier Wildside books did seem to be acquired tastes, i.e. it took a bit of time to get used to the way she approaches storytelling, but I loved them. And I believe I’d love this one once I get into it, too, but so far I’ve had about three false starts on it where I completely zone out after about 10 pages, which only puts me up to about page 50 or so. Very odd. So, I guess it’s going toRead More →

Just found this headline on CNN: ‘JAG’ ending after 10-year run’ And I’m torn. On the one hand, I really liked this series when it first came out. On the other, I haven’t watched it regularly in about three years. About the time Mac got engaged to Brumby. Talk about a big turnoff. So, maybe this is a good thing . . .Read More →

Too Much Temptation by Lori Foster

Life’s been hectic for the last week so I haven’t gotten a lot of reading done but I did start rereading this one a few days ago. It’s become a favorite reread although I probably wouldn’t call it an out and out comfort read. I do enjoy the interaction between the two main characters, Grace and Noah. They are typical Foster hero and heroine and yet somehow subtly different. Yes, Grace is more, um, buxom all the way around than most heroines, Foster’s or anyone else’s, but even that doesn’t explain why these two fascinate me so much. I can’t exactly put my finger onRead More →

Anyone else as amazed as I am at just how good this season of this series has been? I was sure that things would go downhill after they switched to the Sci-Fi channel. Then I was sure things would really not work when Jack stopped being active on the team. Now, I’m sitting here with my mouth hanging open at just how WOW-ed I’ve been over the last few episodes of this season in particular but also the season in general. Way to go. My absolute favorite episode from the season? Citizen JoeRead More →

First person & romance . . . hmm

I was just looking through my immediate TBR (to-be-read) basket, which is one of those long bread baskets, to see what to read next and suddenly realized that I have three first person romances in there currently. That strikes me of indicative of something but I’m not sure what or if it’s a good thing since I’m not all that crazy about the use of that perspective in romances and can’t figure out how I ended up with that many in the basket at one time in the first place. Okay, I know exactly how I ended up with them, impulse buying, pure and simple.Read More →

I ended up buying three new books during one trip to the grocery store. No surprise there, but what I find fascinating is the extremely divergent selection I made in just those three. Who says romances are all the same? First up is Men of Courage II, an anthology collection from Harlequin’s new Signature Select Collection. All three stories are located in the same Ohio town and center on a tornado hitting the town but don’t seem to intersect people-wise. I’ve already read the first – An Honorable Man by Lori Foster, a guilty pleasure of mine but more on that in the future probably.Read More →

Prince Charming by Julie Garwood

So, what to say about Prince Charming, an oldie but a goody? First of all, I know that this book is not one of the favorites of most Julie Garwood fans. Maybe I should say “classic Garwood” fans there, because this is definitely one that falls well between her beloved medievals and her more recent romantic suspense books, which tends to pit longtime fans against the newer ones who’ve just found her. The thing is that I actually like this one quite a bit. I’m not sure I could claim I love it, but I guess there’s just something about it that always makes meRead More →
