Okay, yeah, why IS he hiding out in the jungle exactly?
I have The Phantom starring Billy Zane on video and rewatch it fairly regularly. I wouldn’t say I love it but it’s one of those movies I can watch to pass the time when there isn’t anything else on. What can I say? I’m addicted to superheroes. But I definitely got more than a chuckle out this: Don’t get me wrong, I have a major soft spot for this 1996 Billy Zane vehicle, based on the Lee Falk comic strip, but that says little about its quality. The reason this guy makes the list has less to do with his ham-fisted line delivery or dorky alter ego as it does his lethargy. A new Doctor Who begins tonight on BBC America played by Matt Smith. Well, technically, I think it’s already started in Britain several weeks ago but beggars can’t be choosers. Yeah, I’m now definitely hooked on this long running science fiction series. It all started around Christmas and New Years with the marathons they did as they were wrapping up the run of the last incarnation of the character played by David Tennant. I think I over indulged but I finally started to see the fascination so many have for this character and series. RIP, Patrick
We have very few actors today that are seen as iconic in the old Hollywood tradition. I’m not sure I see Patrick Swayze as that but there are a couple of his movies that definitely stick in one’s mind and won’t let go and, man, could he dance. Several of his films are real romances, too, in our genre definition of the term, which is an important distinction for me. To this day, I can’t pass by a viewing of Dirty Dancing on TV without watching the ending dance number even though I don’t count it as one of my favorite movie. I love this scene, but the dormant Lois & Clark fan fiction writer in me immediately has to wonder what the heck Emil and that critter in the gold and blue suit are doing on what looks to be a deserted island with them. Kind of kills the mood. Heh, maybe it isn’t as dormant as I thought. ;-)
Also:
You know, at first I didn’t even like him all that much but there is just something so totally lovable about Wilfred (Donna Noble’s grandfather on The Doctor) that you just can’t help finding him adorable. Even the Doctor fell under the spell. Sigh.
