Could romance be the Captain Kirk of literature?
May 13th, 2010 | 4 Comments
Blink, blink. You see, that’s the question that occurred to me whilst watching the scene in the new Star Trek movie where Kirk gets to confront his oh, so logical accuser, namely Spock, about his, um, little indiscretion regarding the Kobayashi Maru test when I rewatched the movie this last weekend. Now, for those of you not familiar with Star Trek, here’s something to help ‘splain things. For those of you that are familiar, you should get a real kick out of this montage. You see, it’s not about whether or not the Kobayashi Maru is a valid evaluation of a cadet’s potential readiness for command. It’s about the fact that everyone knows Kirk will never, ever bow to the logic of it. Old Kirk. Young Kirk. Doesn’t matter. He does not … Read entire article »

A romance & science fiction connection
October 18th, 2009 | 3 Comments
I ran across something several weeks ago before my mother went into the hospital and really didn’t know what to do with it. In term of posting about it, I mean. I didn’t actually want it, myself. Seriously. No really. Ahem. Then these comments by Linnea Sinclair on the Does Science Fiction Romance Need a Gene Roddenberry? post over at The Galaxy Express caught my eye: So do we need a Gene Roddenberry? Totally, but if you think about it, we had him. He had several romance plot lines in the original Trek. Later versions had Troi and Worf, and Kira and Odo. Firefly had Mal and Inara. The visual media has NOT been romance-deficient. But watchers are not always readers, apparently. And I immediately knew I had to bring this out as evidence in … Read entire article »

Baskets & Boxes (my Tumblr blog)

Ten.
Okay, I can’t help it. I see this and I giggle. As much as actually like Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, there was just something about Tennant’s attitude that made you think he was laughing half the time. Even when he probably shouldn’t have been

Then I finally got it. Now I’m like, what the… as in, it’s an interesting picture but they seem overly muscled or something. Maybe it’s just me.

[Superman vol 2 #62]
Remember when Clark lost his memory and Lois tried to bring it back by kissing him…
Meanwhile Emil’s attempts to cockblock her were futile.
I love this scene, but the dormant Lois & Clark fan fiction writer in me immediately has to wonder what the heck Emil and that critter in the gold and blue suit are doing on what looks to be a deserted island with them. Kind of kills the mood. Heh, maybe it isn’t as dormant as I thought. ;-)

Also:

You know, at first I didn’t even like him all that much but there is just something so totally lovable about Wilfred (Donna Noble’s grandfather on The Doctor) that you just can’t help finding him adorable. Even the Doctor fell under the spell. Sigh.

Best. Transformer. EVER.
OMG! I want one. Like yesterday. :-)

Sci-fi fans can be scary sometimes – even the, ahem, girls ;-)
March 31st, 2010 | 2 Comments
I know this because I am one. My son knows this because he is a male who has dealt with two female fans, me and his sister. In fact, we got into a discussion about obsessive sci-fi fandoms just the other day after he ran across a Doctor Who forum that I think actually scared him a little at the degree of, um, obsessiveness. Doctor Who has been around for a lot of years and undergone a lot of, er, regenerations. Deadly combination for obssessive fans. Anyone care to speculate on who is worse Star Trek or Doctor Who fans? Not me. All of which musing really made me chuckle when I ran across the following @ The Galaxy Express: The following post is based on true excerpts from an email exchange … Read entire article »
