One of my favorite places on the web
I’m not sure how long it’s been part of the LOL network but I fell in love with Set Phasers To LOL from the first moment I saw it. Partly because like the other LOL sites it has lots of funny stuff, but also because it has its only unique slant/approach to doing things. Which generally involves a combination of the normal captioning of pictures (or in this case screen captures) the LOL sites are known for with a liberal sprinkling of fandom lore that I find equally fascinating. Such as the It Came From Science Fiction post illustrated below: see more Set Phasers To Lol If you click through to the post itself, you’ll find a list – illustrated in multiple book covers no less – of “words that began in … Read entire article »

I think I had a eureka moment
Or maybe not. I’m still mulling it over. First off, I’ve had a lot going on lately but I have been reading and lurking here and there. One of the esoteric “there’s” that I allow my inner self are various design sites just for the sometimes inspiring, sometimes amusing but almost always “oh, wow” images that pop up. Just recently I ran across a brand new blog to check out along those lines: The Steampunk Home I believe that Steampunk is more than just brass and watchparts. It’s finding a way to combine the past and the future in an aesthetic pleasing yet still punkish way. It’s living a life that looks old-fashioned, yet speaks to the future. It’s taking the detritus of our modern technological society and remaking it into useful things. Join … Read entire article »

I’m out and about today @ SF Signal: Mind Meld
A couple of weeks ago, Heather from The Galaxy Express approached me and asked if I’d be interested in participating in a round robin type feature on SF site discussing SF romances. I’ll be honest, I was kind of hesitant at first because I don’t read all that much science fiction. But I decided to at least think about it and give it a try. Final participants include Linnea Sinclair, Jacqueline Lichtenberg, Angela James, Susan Grant, Michael Banks, B.B. Medos (me), Elizabeth Hand, Laurie Green, Lisa Paitz Spindler, Sasha Knight, Sandra McDonald–and, of course, Heather. This is what resulted. The topic? From Star Wars to Avatar, stories blending science fiction and romance have persisted for decades in books, films, fan fiction, and even video games. However, despite such evidence, there are those … Read entire article »

The great vintage science fiction romance hunt begins
I have to say it’s limping along badly. Did anyone else know that Dorchester Publishing has only been around since 1971? I was like, huh. That’s almost scary to me for some reason. We’re talking the purveyors of the Leisure Books and Love Spell. Powerhouse lines in romances and yet also one of the most often mocked both for content and covers. It’s probably a toss-up between them and Avon for the “outrageous” prize and this is said by someone who has oodles and oodles of books by both publishers so don’t think I’m looking down my nose or anything. Okay, why this sudden curiousity about Dorchester? Well, it started with A Brief History of Science Fiction Romance over on The Galaxy Express and a question about whether there were any science fiction … Read entire article »

Excited
A new Doctor Who begins tonight on BBC America played by Matt Smith. Well, technically, I think it’s already started in Britain several weeks ago but beggars can’t be choosers. Yeah, I’m now definitely hooked on this long running science fiction series. It all started around Christmas and New Years with the marathons they did as they were wrapping up the run of the last incarnation of the character played by David Tennant. I think I over indulged but I finally started to see the fascination so many have for this character and series. I mean, what we have here, basically is a character who is: The last survivor of his species Basically invulnerable – because he can regenerate if he is killed, kind of a last resort thing Swoops in a saves the … Read entire article »

Ten Nights of Love: Linnea Sinclair
Next up here I have a special treat. I was digging around some old electronic files recently and found some things that I treasure almost as much as some of my old paperbacks. A lot of people nowadays know about a book called Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair. But do they know about or have the original story that appeared as an e-book called Command Performance from before she made it to the big time in print? I do, plus several of her other books in their original e-book form. Anyhow, I bring all this up to point out that prior to say, about, oh, 2001, I’d most likely already bought some e-books off the Internet but I wasn’t all that sold on the practice. To say it was a … Read entire article »

Sci-fi fans can be scary sometimes – even the, ahem, girls ;-)
March 31st, 2010 | 2 Comments
I know this because I am one. My son knows this because he is a male who has dealt with two female fans, me and his sister. In fact, we got into a discussion about obsessive sci-fi fandoms just the other day after he ran across a Doctor Who forum that I think actually scared him a little at the degree of, um, obsessiveness. Doctor Who has been around for a lot of years and undergone a lot of, er, regenerations. Deadly combination for obssessive fans. Anyone care to speculate on who is worse Star Trek or Doctor Who fans? Not me. All of which musing really made me chuckle when I ran across the following @ The Galaxy Express: The following post is based on true excerpts from an email exchange … Read entire article »
