Taking the time to listen – to myself
Sometime last year I realized how tired I was of endlessly discussing romance novels online. Yeah, there I said it. Okay, to be fair, it wasn’t so much talking about them altogether as the repetitive way we romance fans tend to beat some topics surrounding them to death at times. That may or may not sound like a strange, rather contradictory thing to say, but it’s a true one, nonetheless. Then again, I also considered that maybe it had more to do with personal perspective than actual topic repetition. What I mean is simply this, as both a longtime reader of romances and someone who has been online talking about them for almost two decades, I decided that maybe, just maybe, I needed a tad bit more than simply a short, quick … Read entire article »

My reading list on Goodreads
Because I want to focus more on the older books in my collection here on the site plus play around with some other collectible not-necessarily book stuff, I’ve decided to use Goodreads to keep track of what I’m currently reading on a day-to-day basis. Yeah, I know, it sounds counter-intuitive but, trust me, it’s not. One of the reasons I took such a long break from blogging this last year was that I honestly hate, um, blogging. Well, actually, anything resembling keeping a diary and I’d been attempting to maintain a site like this for over ten years, well before blogging even existed. It wasn’t simply that I needed a break from blogging. I needed a break from talking about books. So I took it. And it was good. … Read entire article »

I think I had a eureka moment
Or maybe not. I’m still mulling it over. First off, I’ve had a lot going on lately but I have been reading and lurking here and there. One of the esoteric “there’s” that I allow my inner self are various design sites just for the sometimes inspiring, sometimes amusing but almost always “oh, wow” images that pop up. Just recently I ran across a brand new blog to check out along those lines: The Steampunk Home I believe that Steampunk is more than just brass and watchparts. It’s finding a way to combine the past and the future in an aesthetic pleasing yet still punkish way. It’s living a life that looks old-fashioned, yet speaks to the future. It’s taking the detritus of our modern technological society and remaking it into useful things. Join … Read entire article »

I think I’m back but we’ll see ;-)
I was going to post about this yesterday but for some reason my Internet connection was the absolute pits. I have a satellite connection and sometimes even when the connection says it’s okay, it just isn’t. Or maybe it was the Internet in general that was off. Whatever, yesterday it was funky as all get out. Some pages would load fast and others wouldn’t even half load. I couldn’t even get to my website admin pages so I finally just gave up. Anyway, back to the point of this post, for the last few weeks, blogging has been on the back burner big time. Long story short, first I was sick or rather the walking injured. Then I was dealing with something going on in my son’s life. Nothing serious just … Read entire article »

Ten Nights of Love: The Introduction
Last fall, Heather over at The Galaxy Express asked me what the dividing line between romance and erotic romance was. I almost laughed in her face - figuratively speaking. I mean, come on. One, much more eloquent people than me have tried to explain it, did great jobs and, yet, still gotten lost in their own words and, two, sometimes, I’m not sure there is an answer. Then I stopped backing away and realized that what she was asking was the age old, ever popular question that comes up repeatedly on romance forum discussions of “how much sex is too much?” before it becomes not romance and off I went emailing her a bunch of thoughts and links which later evolved into this long article that I divided in a series … Read entire article »

Mid-Summer Reading
Currently reading It doesn’t happen often but occasionally I get in the mood to read a biography or an autobiography. Normally, they’re just not on my non-fiction to look for. I tend more towards arts and crafts with a smattering of self-help type books. Recently, though, I’ve become interested in the story and life of Teddy Roosevelt. It’s not simply the political climate in the country but oddly enough I’ve run across several romances over the years that have him in them. Yeah, they do exist. And he’s almost always portrayed as a “character” to say the least. An interesting one but definitely a larger than life personality, almost more so than many of our other Presidents. So, anyway, I got curious and thought I’d start looking for a book on his … Read entire article »
