Why do I keep falling for this stuff when I know what’s going to happen eventually?
I had intended to post on another topic today but between slowly recovering from a cold, a bad elbow that’s limiting my typing and family activities over the weekend that post isn’t ready yet. However a mini-rant came to me out of the blue a couple of nights ago so you get the benefit of that. Anyway, I was in the mood for some detective shows and had sat down to watch the TIVO recording of Monday’s episode of the new Hawaii Five-O and immediately noticed that the description was only two sentences – not unusual – but one was about McGarrett’s personal life, the other was about Danno’s and there was nothing about any case they might be investigating during the episode. My brain did a full stop and … Read entire article »

Ten Nights of Love: Amanda Quick
Once I’d started reading historical romance with Julie Garwood, I did sort of dive into that particular pool headfirst. I remember reading a lot of mostly medievals in those next few years of the early 1990s. All the while still reading some contemporaries and searching for that elusive perfect fantasy/science fiction romance combination to appear on the horizon. There were occasional fits and starts in that direction with the new Leisure/Love Spell line but not a lot of enthusiasm on my part for what they were producing. But back to reading historical romances, I slowly began to dip my toe into the Regency era and it was definitely slow going. Regencies are an acquired taste, long and short or what we in romance call the Traditional Regency Romance. For some strange … Read entire article »

Society sleuths, anyone?
Tomorrow on TCM (Turner Classic Movies) there’s supposed to be a marathon of eleven Falcon movies on November 20 starting at 6 AM (Eastern, I think). God, I love watching those things, almost as much as The Thin Man movies. And if you ask my kids, you’d know I can’t get enough of those. If you like the genre and even if you can’t watch all of them, try to watch/record the first one The Gay Falcon – it’s hilarious. The first time I finally caught it, I kept surprising myself by LOL, literally, at their antics. This one stopped me in my tracks
So, I’m flipping through a bunch of images of vintage paperbacks the other day, checking things off a list in my head, when my eye is caught, not so much by the picture as the title. The Hard-Boiled Virgin (Avon #138, 1947). Whoa. Now, that’s one worthy of Sarah and Candy’s attention, don’t you think? The tangents are just infinite. Needless to say, I couldn’t resist grabbing the image. Small problem, though. So far the only information I’ve found comes from Google Books and it ain’t much: This is a revised version of an early Woodford novel entitled Lady Killer and published under the pseudonym Howard Kennedy. Well, I can see why they changed the title. Maybe. Sort of. What?!? Okay, I’m even more confused now. The sites that do list it for sale … Read entire article »

Head’s up for mystery fans
I recently discovered The Mystery File, a site that reviews vintage mysteries, both book and movies. Today, they posted a schedule of movies that will be showing overnight on the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel. The first half of the list showing tonight are Stewart Granger flicks while the second half are The Saint movies and show tomorrow morning and afternoon into evening. Check it out if you love those old black and whites.
