It’s a dog’s life ;-)
Okay, here’s the deal. I was going to post something thoroughly insightful today but that didn’t pan out. No, seriously, I was but I’ve been feeling like crap for the last two days. Nothing specific, just yuck. If I didn’t know better I’d swear it was the weather, which has actually been rather great but I think that’s a big part of the problem. It’s like we’re already having spring when we should still be having winter and my sinuses are acting up like it’s the middle of summer. I hate feeling this way because I can’t concentrate at all and certainly not on writing posts when I’d rather be outside instead of inside where I’m hot one minute then cold the next. That’s when I’m not feeling like burying my … Read entire article »

greek gods vs. rock stars – I like it
Oh, get your minds out of the gutter. This is about comic books. I ran across this article the other day about the movie wars between Marvel and DC comics and who might be winning. Or who might not be. It was an interesting read. For one thing, I hadn’t realized just how many movies Marvel had put out. They have been seriously cranking them out. Something in particular, though, popped out at me and made me think of the oft-repeated discussions we romance readers have about the appeal of alpha vs. beta heroes. Now this is where I get myself into trouble. I was raised on Marvel. To me, DC comics always seemed like goofy throwbacks to an older age in which no one ever died in comics and the heroes were … Read entire article »

The Holidays, bah, humbug
Alright, not really but not having very much time to post during this busy season is frustrating. So, I’m playing it by ear and posting when I can. In that light and the spirit of the season, I’ve run across this series on the 25 Greatest Christmas Films that I’ve been enjoying reading as they work their way up to #1. I don’t necessarily agree with the reviewer’s choices but that’s all part of the fun of revisiting them through the reviews and thinking about what makes them great. Or not. Today’s choice was #10 and a definite classic on any list: Nominated for Best Best Picture of 1947, everything about Miracle On 34th Street works, but what makes it uniquely special is the on-location shooting, most especially for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day … Read entire article »

Over the Rainbow
Curious personal fact, I have several Wizard of Oz collectibles related to the movie but I’ve never read the Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, the book upon which the 1938 movie is based. I’m not sure that I have any wish to. Maybe some day. Or maybe never. Does this make me a horrible person? OTOH, my son has read or at least started reading it. So, I did something right along the way. Why am I bringing this not-so-adequately buried guilt up? Well, today is the anniversary of the release of the movie. Yes, it was released 70 years ago on August 12, 1939 at the Strand Theatre in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and this little tidbit of knowledge got me taking that trip down the yellow brick road of memory. … Read entire article »

Head’s up for mystery fans
I recently discovered The Mystery File, a site that reviews vintage mysteries, both book and movies. Today, they posted a schedule of movies that will be showing overnight on the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel. The first half of the list showing tonight are Stewart Granger flicks while the second half are The Saint movies and show tomorrow morning and afternoon into evening. Check it out if you love those old black and whites.
