Ten Nights of Love: Julie Garwood

Sometime during 1989, I picked up a copy of Romantic Times at the local independent bookstore, when we still had a local independent bookstore here, because I distinctly remember that was where I first read a preview of The Bride by Julie Garwood. So, I did something very out-of-character and found that book. I say it was out-of-character because before that I didn’t like to read historicals. The Bride was not only my first book by Garwood but the first historical romance I ever remember reading and actually enjoying. I loved it and the rest as they say is history. I remember reading an interview with Julie Garwood on AAR where she talks about not even realizing her first romance, Gentle Warrior, 1985, was a romance when she wrote it. I believe her … Read entire article »

So, what do people really believe are in romances that is so abhorrent?

I’ve asked this question before and I’ll probably ask it many times again before I die but it popped into my head yesterday while deep in the mislabeling discussion over at Dear Author. Only this time I’m not going to fall into the trap of trying to find an answer, partly because I’m not sure there is an answer. Not a single answer, anyway. Usually all asking does is lead to endless unsatisfying speculation. This time I’m going to be smart, I hope, and instead ask for solid evidence. Short of that, I’ll settle for second-hand accounts that maybe we can compile into some kind of pattern. Here’s the question. If you’re a convert to romance reading, what did you believe was in the books before you converted, i.e. what kept you from trying them? If you’ve … Read entire article »

What to reread next

I’m sort of vertical again and trying to decide what I’m in the mood to reread because I know I’m not in the mood to concentrate on something completely new at present. So far, and this is just since last night, I’ve pulled Mine To Take by Dara Joy off the shelf and put it back. I thought about reading another Krentz but couldn’t decide which one. Right at the moment I have two Julie Garwoods on my bedside table – The Prize and The Gift – and I’m really not sure I’m in the mood for either of them. Don’t ya just hate it when you have no idea what you’re in the mood to read? Related Posts:The ones I reach for all the timeSo, what do people really believe are … Read entire article »

The Captain’s Woman

Since The Captain’s Woman by Merline Lovelace came out in 2003 it’s moved right up to the top of my personal comfort reread list (surpassing even The Bride by Julie Garwood some of the time I might add, which is saying quite a lot) for the simple reason that it has it all- an intelligent but not so much spoiled as indulged young heroine who goes on both an emotional and physical journey/adventure, truly growing up in the process a not-so-old but definitely more mature hero who is extremely honorable if somewhat dense at times who also does his share of growing and changing a unique setting that makes it stand out in one’s memory on almost any list because the hero is one of Roosevelt’s Rough Riders and she follows him through … Read entire article »
