Happy Valentine’s Day
As many years as I’ve been reading romances I’ve never taken the time to look up the history of Valentine’s Day. So, this year I did some reading online and found it fascinating but one reference in particular caught my eye because I suddenly realized I might’ve stumbled across the origin of “scrapbooks” in a rather unexpected place. Check out this quote and see if you catch what I did: Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as “scrap.” Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are … Read entire article »

How… odd
I decided I would make a list of all the Valentine romances that I have to share for today’s post. Only thing is that when I dug around my shelves, my book database, my e-book files and, well, just about anywhere I could think of I came up with only one Harlequin paperback and 2 e-books that even just mention Valentine’s Day much less have that as a theme. (And the two e-books are basically … Read entire article »

Excited
A new Doctor Who begins tonight on BBC America played by Matt Smith. Well, technically, I think it’s already started in Britain several weeks ago but beggars can’t be choosers. Yeah, I’m now definitely hooked on this long running science fiction series. It all started around Christmas and New Years with the marathons they did as they were wrapping up the run of the last incarnation of the character played by David Tennant. I think I over indulged but I finally started to see the fascination so many have for this character and series. I mean, what we have here, basically is a character who is: The last survivor of his species Basically invulnerable – because he can regenerate if he is killed, kind of a last resort thing Swoops in a saves the … Read entire article »

The Holidays, bah, humbug
Alright, not really but not having very much time to post during this busy season is frustrating. So, I’m playing it by ear and posting when I can. In that light and the spirit of the season, I’ve run across this series on the 25 Greatest Christmas Films that I’ve been enjoying reading as they work their way up to #1. I don’t necessarily agree with the reviewer’s choices but that’s all part of the fun of revisiting them through the reviews and thinking about what makes them great. Or not. Today’s choice was #10 and a definite classic on any list: Nominated for Best Best Picture of 1947, everything about Miracle On 34th Street works, but what makes it uniquely special is the on-location shooting, most especially for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day … Read entire article »

Society sleuths, anyone?
Tomorrow on TCM (Turner Classic Movies) there’s supposed to be a marathon of eleven Falcon movies on November 20 starting at 6 AM (Eastern, I think). God, I love watching those things, almost as much as The Thin Man movies. And if you ask my kids, you’d know I can’t get enough of those. If you like the genre and even if you can’t watch all of them, try to watch/record the first one The Gay Falcon – it’s hilarious. The first time I finally caught it, I kept surprising myself by LOL, literally, at their antics. Dragon Storm alert
I am a fan of romances. I am rarely a fan of individual authors. On occasion, though, I do fixate on a few that I follow, um, religiously, shall we say, at least in terms of knowing when their new books in certain series or themes are coming out. My fan spidey sense says one of my current favored ones, Bianca D’Arc, has a new one coming out today in her Dragon Knights group called Dragon Storm. Make of that information what you will. Where are you, Scooby Doo?
Oh, there you are. Or were. Last night. In a new live action movie on the Cartoon Network entitled Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Begins. So admit it. How many of the rest of you watched it, too? If you missed it and like the Scooby gang, you might want to try to catch it during one of the many reruns/replays they’ll be doing because they did a pretty good job of capturing the characters. I’d even stack it up against the two theatrical live action movies and say it might even be a better story than both of them. Maybe not as well-acted because the stars weren’t major actors but then again not as overshadowed by special effects either. Just a really entertaining piece of storytelling that hit it’s mark with a … Read entire article »

Over the Rainbow
Curious personal fact, I have several Wizard of Oz collectibles related to the movie but I’ve never read the Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, the book upon which the 1938 movie is based. I’m not sure that I have any wish to. Maybe some day. Or maybe never. Does this make me a horrible person? OTOH, my son has read or at least started reading it. So, I did something right along the way. Why am I bringing this not-so-adequately buried guilt up? Well, today is the anniversary of the release of the movie. Yes, it was released 70 years ago on August 12, 1939 at the Strand Theatre in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and this little tidbit of knowledge got me taking that trip down the yellow brick road of memory. … Read entire article »

Lesson from hummingbirds
Several years ago we went to the Hummingbird Festival/Weekend that falls on or around the last weekend in July at the Land Between the Lakes Nature Station near us in western Kentucky and were so fascinated by the little critters we immediately came back home and got a feeder to hang on our front porch. Since we’d never actually seen any hummingbirds around our house – it’s not so much a matter of having binoculars as being fast enough to focus them in the right place at the right time, you know – we didn’t have much expectation of any appearing. Imagine our surprise when we were immediately greeted by several of them, literally within hours if not minutes. Chirping, chattering, buzzing, territorial, extremely addictive-to-watch finger-size avians. We now have three feeders, two … Read entire article »

There are few TV series that I feel truly deserve the honor of being collected in their entirety. Stargate SG1 is one of them. Truth to tell, I’ve only recorded two other start to finish in my entire life – Star Trek: The Next Generation and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. I still haven’t gotten the DVD version of ST:TNG – eleven years worth is damn expensive, you know. I have upgraded to the DVDs of L&C. We didn’t record SG1 ourselves either. Not sure why, but this was simply a series that one knew was going to be merchandized so we waited and got the complete collection all in one shot. Translated, this means that my son conned his father into getting it for us. Whatever … Read entire article »

Lasagna, anyone?
see more Lolcats and funny pictures Recently I realized I had collected several things related to Garfield and it got me curious enough to check for how long the, um, happy cat has been around. Did you know he’s been gracing our lives since June 19, 1978? I didn’t. Wow. I knew I’d loved that cantankerous cat for along time but, still, wow. So, what do I have in my personal Garfield stash? Metallic picture that looks more like it belongs in a tavern than anywhere else – I’m honestly not sure how long I’ve had this one. Or where exactly I got it. But I love it and it’s been hanging over my desk for years. He has such a satisfied expression on his face that you just know he has to … Read entire article »
